Naming: Yevhen Kushnaryov, Yevhen Kushnarov, Evgeniy Kushnaryov...
[edit]Looking at Google search results, Yevhen Kushnaryov comes up with 18,100 hits. But Yevhen is Ukrainian name (Evgeniy — Russian) and Kushnaryov is Russian (Kushnarov — Ukrainian, as Ukrainian language has no ё/yo. I am wondering why are we using the so to say "surzhyk-type" based transliteration of his name... Wouldn't it be more correct to use a first and last name in the same language: Yevhen Kushnarov or Evgeniy Kushnaryov? —dima/s-ko/ 19:28, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I see, there are different transliteration ways for the letters ьов... —dima/s-ko/ 22:17, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Exactly. "Yo" doesn't necessarily denote "Ё", either - personally, I prefer to transliterate that Russian letter simply as "E" if diacritics are absent. So in Russian, he would properly be "Kushnarev". Plus, the late Yevhen Petrovych evidently preferred the "Kushnaryov" spelling himself. Cossack 22:02, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Russian Ё is Ukrainian ЬО and English YO --Юе Артеміс (talk) 22:03, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
