Page significantly out of date
[edit]Please update the page with more recent information, currently even things such as the Mayor are incorrect. There has been an update template added to the page to reflect this.Tsuser (talk) 18:44, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
Yelm ranked 10th of 279 eligible incorporated communities in population growth between 2000 and 2005.
[edit]Is that per Washington, or per another region??

Ramtha School of Enlightenment
[edit]RSE is considered a very large blackmark on the community of Yelm. The city limits are also in debate, as Knight often claims her "compound" is outside city limits. Being so, it should not be included in the Yelm wiki entry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rkrizan (talk • contribs) 10:49, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not a soapbox or battleground. "Blackmark" is POV. No matter how you feel about Ramtha, there is no question that the school and Knight have an impact on the city. Nowhere is it writtent that an article on a city has to precisely include only things within the city limits. Katr67 (talk) 18:32, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- Negative impact on the City of Yelm. Border restrictions apply. If Ramtha claims the compound is not within city limits, it should not be included in the city's wiki entry. Rkrizan (talk) 19:00, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter if the impact is negative. Wikipedia is not censored, nor is it a place to paint a pretty picture of a place--that is, it is not a tourism guide. Please stop your POV editing or you may be blocked for disruption or edit warring. Thanks. Katr67 (talk) 19:15, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- It's also not a place to promote a cult or business. Yet you Ramster trolls seem to do it all day. Rkrizan (talk) 20:26, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- Please, no personal attacks or implications. Focus on the content. Wikipedia strives to be balanced, which means including positive and negative information about a city, organization, and so on. tedder (talk) 20:31, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- FWIW Rkrizan, I'm neither pro- or anti-Ramtha. I just happen to have spent a lot of time in Yelm and I know that the school has a huge impact on the area. This article needs to reflect all aspects of the city, not just ones that you deem appropriate. To remove all mention of the school from the article, we would need community consensus. Merely mentioning the school in the article is not "promoting" it. See WP:ADVERT for more on that sort of thing. If you want balance, try to find some reliable sources that you can cite stating that the school's presence in the area is controversial. Then we can work on a paragraph that explains how the place may or may not fit in with the community. If you feel you are being treated unfairly, see our page about dispute resolution if you'd like some other opinions. Thanks. Katr67 (talk) 21:47, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- I don't feel that I'm being treated unfairly at all. I'm merely expressing general public views on the cult. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rkrizan (talk • contribs) 16:03, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- "General public views" have no place in an encyclopedia article about a city. Laguna greg 23:16, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
(unindent) Ah, and around here, that's what is known as original research. Wikipedia articles need cited sources to back up claims. Something like a quote from the Olympian stating "65% of the city's inhabitants feel that the presence of RSE in Yelm gives the community a bad name. In addition, 55% of Yelm residents think that RSE is a cult." Of course someone would have had to have done an actual study like that, but you get my drift. Katr67 (talk) 23:46, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- City boundaries are defined government entities, not other agencies or personalities or someone's personal aversion to them. It is easy to look up; has anybody? The economic and social impact of the school on the town over the last 30 years has been unmistakable and discussed by many in the popular media, and in published data sets from the city, county and state. If someone wants to go to the trouble of putting together a bibliography, you'd find a pile of information on the subject. Even if that's too much work, leaving out any mention of the school's existence in the region is a glaring omission considering it is arguably the most celebrated and notorious cultural institution in the entire region and internationally, as well as one of the region's largest and most successful employers all during this time. After all, a few other people of considerably less note and impact are already mentioned in the article. Not including it just looks like somebody here doesn't like the school personally.Laguna greg 23:13, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
Yelm City Council
[edit]Per BRD, starting a discussion here over the inclusion of the names of the councilmembers. I concur that none of these people warrant stand-alone articles. But NOTDIR doesn't apply here, as we're talking about 7 elected members of a city council on an article about that city. Yelm has a mayor-council government system and these names have been in the article since 2010. It's generally expected that you can find the names of elected officials on the article of the body that they represent. Councilmembers' election and turnover is regularly reported in the local news. - It's a small town, these members are not notable in their own right, and these positions can change outside of election cycles. As including lists of councilmembers for every city in the country would create an undue burden of maintenance, it's best to leave it out and direct readers to the official city website. For similar reasons, we do not list every paid staff member for the city or every board member for a small company. It would be different for a larger city (covered by a regular daily newspaper) where councilmembers might be notable enough for their own articles. SounderBruce 05:48, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
- That sounds rather reasonable. Let's do it your way. gobonobo + c 07:29, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
