This is a sub-standard article with more speculation than fact. 82.35.40.241 00:26, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone have any information about the composition of these swords? I would assume the first ones would have been made of bronze, but when would they have transitioned to iron? Was this after the rise of Rome, or did it occur earlier?Theseeker4 (talk) 16:38, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edited the page in disgust :) I will add references as soon as possible, felt that I had to put down what I remember from previous research. Will fill in blanks when I add references. I do not have much info on hilt design, as I have have been mainly interested in blade design but I shall try to find something suitable. I will also add a picture since the last one was not, imo, representative for a xiphos.

There is a small error. Cast iron is brittle and requires molten iron. The tech to make molton iron is much later than the greek sword in question at least in Europe. The correct term should have been wrought iron which is created by heating and hammering small lumps of iron taken from the bloom after it cooled. The process of heating and hammering can slowly incorporate carbon into the iron changing it into steel in a rather hit or miss way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.229.234.212 (talk) 16:19, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
