The hairy snails and their allies?

Now I'm sure of one thing--I don't know anything about snails. But I do know that the concept of "allies" generally involves some degree of sentience, and most snails seem to have a dearth of this quality. Of course, I know my ignorance may extend to a zoological concept of "allies" beyond that with which I am familiar, but if that's the case, then there should be some link to an appropriate article explaining the concept.
