Section on player in action
[edit]Would a section on "player in action" be appropriate, showcasing the pictures taken during Liverpool matches in which Xabi Alonso, the great ball passer, plays in? --chapter1 09:20, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]please see Talk:Steven Gerrard for my opinions on fansite listings. Basically I don't think this is the place to advertise your shrine to a particular player, unless your site has something incredibly useful to offer (a forum doesn't count). If you wish to have you fansite considered by the general wikipedia community, please list it here first before adding it to the page. Thanks, aLii 18:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Goal from within own half
[edit]Came to update with Xabi's goal from his own half tonight (some scamp got there first!). It got me thinking though - the last 2 goals he has scored for Liverpool have been from within his own half (if memory serves). I wonder if that is a first?
Not the sort of thing you would expect is easy to find out, but if so I think it could be noteworthy.

[edit]There's an error in your information. In Basque we don't pronounce "Chabi", we say "Shabi". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.93.21.99 (talk • contribs) 23:56, 11 August 2006.

[edit]Is it just my browser or is the section that ought to read
"Alonso arrived at Liverpool from Real Sociedad in August 2004." read "Alonso arrived at Liverpool from Real Sociedad in August 2009"??
In the edit section it says 2004, but at the review page it reads 2009... Whats the problem???
- It sounds like you're reading an old version of the page, it looks as it should ("2004") now. Poulsen 11:01, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
I am new to wiki but i edited Xabis profile with an updste on his nickname.
I added Bone as one of his nicknames.
Only a small change but i was just giving it a go, but thi seems to be removed - why is this??
- Because his nickname isn't Bone?--Tiresais 14:30, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Isn't his nickname by the commentators No So Shabby Alonso, cos he ain't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Filo23 (talk • contribs) 12:55, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
That first paragraph is written like a novel. 'On the Basque sands....' doesn't sound like a reference page, more like a poetic romance. Might want to make it more matter of a fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.95.133.137 (talk) 22:25, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Career section
[edit]The career section needs to be split into club and international subsections. Right now it's one big jumble. sixtynine • spill it • 03:17, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not so sure about it being a "big jumble" – it's just organised chronologically. I know most quality football articles organise it through "club" and "international" sections but I would like to question the methodology. The player layout set out by WP:FOOTY makes no mention of split the content; it is only split in the honours section. I think the article incorporates both club and country well (though, admittedly, more expansion is needed for Euro 2008). Is their anything specifically wrong with a layout based upon chronological reasons rather than national/international levels? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 22:49, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- It's a matter of preference, there's no set style. I personally prefer splitting out international career for players who have played many games for their country, but as long as it flows well and doesn't jump about too much, I see no problem with combining the two. --Jameboy (talk) 23:19, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Madrid transfer
[edit]Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Whilst Liverpool have confirmed a transfer this is still subject to a medical being completed. Until this has been completed and Real madrid confirm the deal the player should remain as a Liverpool player. Steve-Ho (talk) 17:39, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed. Although the move seems imminent, let's wait for one of the clubs to announce that a transfer has been completed. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)WIKIPROJECT ATHLETICS NEEDS YOU! 17:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Real Madrid have confirmed that a deal for Xabi Alonso has been reached. Here's the link: http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite/en/1202777495078/noticia/ComunicadoOficial/DEAL_REACHED_WITH_LIVERPOOL_FOR_XABI_ALONSO.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.225.32.240 (talk) 18:56, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- There is no denying that a deal has been reached. Both the Liverpool and Madrid websites report that. That does not mean that the player is yet a Madrid player. The deal is subject to Alonso passing a medical and signing a contract. The medical is scheduled for Wednesday 5th August in Madrid, and I would assume he will sign a contract after the medical. There have been a fair few examples of deals being reached between clubs and then players failing medicals and transfers being called off. Until a player passes a medical and signs a contract Wikipedia profiles should not be altered as the player has not officially changed clubs. Steve-Ho (talk) 19:03, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I know there is no denying that a deal has been reached. I just wanted to add the link so that people can see it for themselves. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.225.32.240 (talk) 20:28, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Needs expansion on Real Madrid
[edit]A whole season (2012-13) is missing, as are a lot of references. If this is to remain a GA it needs expanding there. Sources shouldn't be hard to find with it being so recent. '''tAD''' (talk) 21:47, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Notability
[edit]Why is it that missing a penalty is considered more notable than scoring a goal by some of the editors of this page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by !hellao! (talk • contribs) 21:52, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
- One of the goals is in a round of 16 domestic cup match against a club that is likely to be relegated. Everyone expected Bayern to win, Bayern did win, so the match will soon be forgotten. The goal of this match is also not notable. Same goes for the goal in the league match against Werder Bremen. A DFB-Pokal final or DFL-Supercup match is much more important. --Jaellee (talk) 19:08, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Xabi Alonso is Basque not Spanish
[edit]In this entry it is written that Alonso is Spanish. This is incorrect. He is a Basque. I will edit unless someone can show he is actually Spanish. If you wish to write he is Basque from the country of Spain you can but that is waste of words imo. It is correct to say he played for the Spain national football team, which includes Basques and Catalans etc. http://en.espn.co.uk/espn/sport/player/73935.html HackneyGlyn21 (talk) 16:39, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hoisted by your own petard. Your source does say the word Basque, well done for your googling skills, but also refers to his "fellow Spaniards Josemi, Luis Garcia and Antonio Nunez". So you showed the obvious yourself. How could he not be Spanish if he was born in that country and played for their national team??? 81.79.177.116 (talk) 19:18, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- Basque is a part of Spain no? Basque Country is a Spanish region not its own country. Sadsolarpanel (talk) 10:21, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
One source is enough
[edit]@ManGoBangla: Read here Joško Gvardiol to Manchester City for instance, one source which is the club's website. Which "Administration" are writing about? 2A02:908:4E3:9520:658F:3E79:11A4:C394 (talk) 13:22, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Note: Edit warring warnings have been issued to both the parties regarding potential violation of 3RR. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 13:56, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- I am not discussing Xabi Alonso here until the administrator has had chance to review the issue. I will point out that, having done a quick scan of Joško Gvardiol's article, I can see twenty or more statements with multiple citations. ManGoBangla (talk) 14:42, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- What is wrong with using two sources? GiantSnowman 08:11, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Exactly. I think that it would perhaps be an overload if several sources were cited but two or three seem ideal providing they complement each other. I previously commented on the number of multi-cited statements in the Gvardiol article and I see that the very first paragraph of Xabi Alonso's article cites FOUR sources.
- I will not restore my source yet as I understand that a consensus is necessary.
- I will say that my source was the first one cited after the statement was added, that The Daily Star is unquestionably a reliable source, and that the citation should not have been removed. As far as the club site is concerned, I had seen in WP:V that sources must be independent although, as long as it is otherwise reliable, I now agree that it is valid. In a case like this, where one source is not independent, perhaps a second source should be mandatory. That, however, is not something we can resolve here.
- I would like to thank GiantSnowman and The Herald (Benison) for your help as the issue has given me some good learning points and useful experience. Among the learning points, I came across WP:BRD this morning and I wish I had known about that sooner. ManGoBangla (talk) 10:01, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
