Fielding circles

This is what I have learned from discussing with people : The fielding circles were first tried out in South African domestic cricket in the mid-70s. When World Series Cup started in 1977/8, the started using it from the very beginning. Initially, they had two circles for either wicket, but later merged it into a single oval. In 1977/8, they had 40 8-ball over matches, and the fielding restrictions applied for the first 10.

Can someone find a proper reference for this so that it can be added in the article ? Tintin 00:21, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Uniforms

The various uniforms worn by the teams have taken on a cult status in Australia and New Zealand (see eg the "Beige Brigade"). Some pictures would be helpful for the article. BaHaReep 06:39, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Is this a quote (from the "rapprochement" section):

The feeling in many quarters was that when the Australian Board first found Packer at their throats, the rest of the cricket world supported them to the hilt; even to the extent of highly expensive court cases which cricket could ill afford. Now, when it suited Australia, they had brushed their friends aside to meet their own ends.

Rating

I have relegated this from B-class to Start-class (see above) because of doubts about categories and because the template at the foot of the article appears to be both redundant and of little use to the article or the project. If someone can ensure that it has sufficient categorisation and take appropriate action re the template, then I would have no problem with this becoming B-class again. It has the potential to achieve GA-class or higher but it must satisfy the B-class criteria first. --Jim Hardie (talk) 14:53, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Spinners

The article says "Few spin bowlers were signed by WSC. Packer himself was doubtful of the effectiveness of slow bowling." Apart from the Indian and Pakistan teams (who Packer didn't really target), Packer did sign the main spinners in world cricket at the time (e.g. Underwood for England, Mallett, Bright and O'Keefe for Australia). I've tagged the statements and I'm tempted to remove them. Adpete (talk) 05:45, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

I didn't add the statement but Gideon Haigh mentions this in his book The Cricket War, and this is probably the source for the statement. I think we can safely remove the "Few spin bowlers ..." sentence, because as you point out, it is untrue. I don't have a copy of The Cricket War to hand to back the second sentence but there may be an editor with one who could. --Roisterer (talk) 00:25, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Packer's antipathy to slow bowling was well documented & WSC only signed a handful of specialist spinners. There's the famous example of Mallett who Packer scorned until Chappell suggested Packer should face him in the nets. Although he was eventually signed, Mallett didn't play any of the big matches & was relegated to the Cavaliers matches. West Indies played their famous fast foursome, Aussies sometimes played 4 quicks and sometimes 3 quicks + Bright. Underwood turned out for the World XI but otherwise they relied on pace as well; the other spinner they signed was Dennys Hobson who didn't come due to an embargo on some RSA players. WSC marketing focssed heavily on fast bowling. To say Packer wasn't interested in Pak/India players is nonsense. He had agreements with enough Pakistanis to field a full team for the aborted 3rd season, and had 6 Indians under option for the 3rd season as well.
