How many sections
[edit]There are in some ways only four sections (strings, woodwind, brass, percussion) to a symphony orchestra. Haydn, the "father" of the symphony, Mozart and Beethoven would only have recognised these four, with percussion often limited to timpani.
On the other hand, Berlioz regards the keyboards as a fifth section, and this is now fairly standard. Others regard all instruments outside the four basic sections, such as the concert harp, as standing alone and outside any section.
And of course for choral symphonies there is a choral section.
Somewhere, this history should be documented. Not sure in which article. Andrewa (talk) 22:12, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
