[edit]Why is this proposed for deletion if there's a project to create articles like this...? --Apeloverage 10:52, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
This comic could probably be referenced alongside "Married To The Sea." They have a similar idiosyncratic way of creating content (adding text to 19th century monographs), and Wondermark's comic #29 includes a drawing of a woman with some kind of circle on her stomach which has also been used in the Married to the Sea comics. perhaps this comic, started in 2003, had somethign to do with the inspiration of Married to the Sea, started 2006. Are there other examples of 'found art' comics out there? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.176.147.182 (talk • contribs)
The 4.13.07 comic mentions Wikipedia. 72.49.113.99 02:28, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
- And it's hugely funny :-) --Hobit 02:36, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed. I've added a link to it, in a line about Wondermark's subject matter. Bit of a blatant excuse to put it in there, but I think it's kind of fun - and not too wildly off-topic. -- TinaSparkle 16:03, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Malki ! or Malki
[edit]Most sources online seem to spell the creator's name without the exclamation, and as far as I can tell (I'm not a regular Wondermark reader, so I'm just guessing) there's no evidence that he himself takes the exclamation point seriously in real life (ie, outside of the comic). In fact, even at the WCCA Awards, they have spelled his name without the exclamation: [1] and [2]. Here are some reviews, etc., that spell the name without an exclamation point: [3], [4], [5].
The only sources I came across so far that keep the exclamation point are [6] and [7] and Ryan North in the comment text of today's Dinosaur Comic), both of which are blogs and probably less reliable sources than the ones above. Since Wikipedia should use people's real names rather than playing along with what (as far as I can tell) is mostly a joke (considering that most sources I've seen appear to be treating Malki as his real name), I'm going to go ahead and remove the exclamation point in the article. You can revert it if you disagree, but please also discuss your reasons why here. Thanks, —Politizer( talk • contribs ) 05:39, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- From his own web site, "David spells his name with an exclamation point, insisting that one space be left between the punctuation and the 'i' in his last name, for aesthetic reasons. It should be considered an honorific and used in the same manner that one would use 'Jr.', 'Ph.D', or 'Esq.'" I guess it depends if you consider a primary source a reliable enough source for one's own name or not. Either way, it might be worth simply stating that he adds an exclamation mark to his name in the article, with that page as the reference, which should be fine as far as the primary source guidelines go, and would have all bases covered. 77.103.197.181 (talk) 20:03, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I read that too, but that's Malki writing about himself, and doesn't mean the spelling is official. I don't mind including a sentence or two in the article mentioning that Malki likes to spell his name with an exclamation point, but we should use the regular version (Malki) throughout the article as a default.
- For comparison, look at E. E. Cummings. There is someone whose nonstandard spelling of his own name is much more well-known, and even in that case the Wikipedia consensus seems to have been towards using the "official" name. —Politizer( talk • contribs ) 20:24, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- In general, when other online sources (e.g., other webcomics) reference David Malki, they always include the !. Knowing the Wikipedia, though, that probably doesn't count as an actual reference. Still, I'd only argue for putting in a sentence or two somewhere mentioning it. 74.236.79.85 (talk) 06:11, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- I would argue that it should be used in all cases, as to do otherwise would be exceedingly disrespectful. Teraghast (talk) 00:43, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Why? Is it his official name? Did you read the comments above? rʨanaɢ (talk) 21:20, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- An additional point of reference here: David published a book (Machine of Death) with Ryan North and Matthew Bennardo, and throughout (including on the cover) he is named *with* the exclamation point, and the same is true for the sequel. His Amazon author page shows that his author credits in various publications are a mix of the two variations. This seems to lend credence to taking "Malki !" more seriously, imo. --The Human Spellchecker (talk) 23:46, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- Special:Contributions/74.236.79.85, Teraghast and The Human Spellchecker: ditto in January 2016. since 2010 Malki ! has consequently used the exclamation marked form of his name, so I agree with you on that as the "official" form of spelling on WP.
- what do you think, Politizer, 7 years later? --Wuerzele (talk) 20:26, 5 January 2016 (UTC) or, Rjanag in case the ping to politicizer doesnt work.--Wuerzele (talk) 20:33, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Source to use for citations and expansion
[edit]Noticed this article is wanting for references, and I've just found an audio interview with David Malki ! on The Sound of Young America. An archive of the program can be heard at http://www.spokenword.org/program/151610. I'm not in a position to do much with it at the moment but there it is! Too many links to Malki's site
[edit]Excessive inline links and number of links overall to the site, per WP:EL and common sense. Page should be tagged to clean these up, any suggestions for a tag? I was going to use {{advert}}, but that doesn't seen quite right... CliffC (talk) 05:03, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
