Potential expansion
[edit]The account of the club in this article starts in 2001, whereas the club (in various guises) appears to date back to the foundation of Witney F.C. in 1885, and apparently became Witney Town F.C. in 1922. Does anyone know of any reliable references that might inform an expansion? Is there an official history? I found this, which gives a potted history, but I don't want to rely on a single source. At the moment, the article is confusing and grossly incomplete, as it describes only the successor clubs and omits the bulk of the club's history, including most of its more successful periods. If no-one comes forward I might have a go, but I know nothing about the club and haven't lived in Witney for over 20 years. Dave.Dunford (talk) 20:38, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Collecting sources:
- 2021 article on Southern League website – Useful potted history, particularly for later years. Confirms that (as of 2021) senior football has not returned to Witney, and planning permission for housing on the site of the ground was granted in 2016.
- Witney Town Info and History – Source unclear; covers 1885–c.2000.
- Football Club History Database: Witney Town – Has league positions and cup results from 1953–2013.
- The Witney Town FC saga – Oxford Mail article and interview with then-chairman, with detail of closure of original club in 2001.
- Witney United Football Club - The 'Blanketmen' – Page on moribund (?) general Witney site. Covers 2001–05. Much of the existing Wikipedia article appears to be a close paraphrase (copyvio?) of this.
- Witney Town F.C. Club History – Defunct official site for phoenix club. Covers 2001–12. States that the Witney Town name was resurrected in June 2011.
