new map method

@Talthiel: What do you think about using .map files (example on this article for 2024) instead of PNG images? Both options have their pros and cons. -- Asdasdasdff (talk) 19:29, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think using a plain image file (could SVGs not be made?) would be a good idea for the infobox, but maybe using a .map file somewhere else in the page @Asdasdasdff Talthiel (talk) 20:14, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Although actually thinking on it, could something like what is done on the Wisconsin's 8th congressional district page be done for WI's assembly/senate districts? where the .map file is the main image and then there's a tinier svg map in the corner? Talthiel (talk) 20:16, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

EDIT: I saw you already did that, mb. Yeah I like the idea, though I think it's a bit moot atm, since there is still no official maps from the LRB. I also feel it'd be better to standardize the maps for all 132 districts into this format with each redistricting cycle (so the maps for the 2011 and 2022 cycle would have this same format. Yeah, its annoying that LRB hasn't published anything yet, but while we're waiting I wanted to think through some of the alternatives for display. And I do think I'd like to go retroactive and format the older district maps in whatever format we use for 2024, but I'd want to prioritize getting the 2024 work done first. I think I'll give LRB until April 1, and if there's nothing published by then I'll get started using the DavesRedistricting shapefiles and demographics. -- Asdasdasdff (talk) 20:49, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Talthiel: Do you think the SVG image in the corner of the map is clear enough? I worry about how it'll look on some of the tiny districts in Milwaukee. Maybe I should hide the surface features like the rivers, parks, highways, and population centers so its just a flat white (or yellowish) background and the district shows up as a more noticeable color. -- Asdasdasdff (talk) 23:14, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Talthiel: As I suspected, a lot of those inset unzoomed maps are too hard to see with the smaller Assembly districts. So I had another idea -- what if I added a silhouette of the other two Assembly districts composing the Senate district, and then make the Senate district the inset instead? We could just forego the inset entirely and opt to use one type of map or the other in the infobox itself, and put the other one somewhere in the article.
