Wipeout soundtracks

I don't contest the Saturn exclusives, but I do question the PlayStation tracks; should I assume that the three listed are exclusive to the European version? My US Saturn version has all of the CoLD SToRAGE tracks, minus Transvaal (note: not 'Trancevaal' as it is currently listed), whereas my US PlayStation copy just has the CoLD SToRAGE tracks (including Transvaal), with nothing of the Orbital, Chems, or Leftfield tracks. Just seeking clarification at this point, really.

Wait, weren't there songs by the Propeller Heads? I remember playing the N64 version for countless hours and listening to their (awesome) song "Bang On". I'm pretty sure there were others by the same band, but why aren't they listed under the music section? Also, I don't remember any Chemical Brothers songs...Hevendor 21:02, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Move to Wipeout

If the article mistypes it as "Wipeout", then every instance of that needs to be fixed; it's officially WipEout, and the fact they even toyed with that capital E (in Wip3out) seems to me that it's a fairly pertinent point. As for conventions... well, there's always time for change. This seems to be more important than tossing "Realtor" in all caps, at any rate. This article has been renamed after the result of a move request. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (trademarks): "Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules even if the trademark owner encourages special treatment". Style guidelines can be set aside, but not without a good reason and strong support. In my judgment this has neither. Hence I have moved this to Wipeout (game) following the suggestion of Sjorford. I also created the suggested disambig at Wipeout. If you want to discuss and poll on whether the game should be Wipeout (game) or Wipeout, I will be happy to entertain that, but a 3-2 vote for "WipEout" does not supplant the consensus backing for not using funky capitalization as expressed in the style guidelines. I know wikipedia has spoken regarding it's restrictions on capitalisation, but I just thought I should mention that for the first 2 games in the series (wipEout and 2097) the name was actually written wipE'out", lowercase w, capital E, and with the single apostrophe after the E and double after the t, so it was more than just a missplaced capital. Over the years they gradually diluted this, first the apostrophes disappeared for wip3out, and then with Fusion they capitalised the W. Seek100 03:05, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

PSP version

We've recently discovered that the Euro version of Wipeout refuses to play wirelessly with the US version. I'm not sure if this is worth noting, but a fair number of people imported from the US (to the UK). Cpc464 12:38, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

I can confirm this. My euro edition is incompatible with my friend's US edition. I'm adding it, since personally i wish i had known this when i bought the game, and reckon it's relevant information. --Decept404 11:44, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Wipeout Pure reformatting

I've been doing some reformatting on this page, and I have an idea that might make the Wipeout Pure section a little more readable. I'd like to separate out the contents of each downloadable pack, and present them under separate headings under the main Pure heading, like this example with the imaginary "Foo Pack":

Downloadable expansion packs

There are several expansion packs available for download from various sources (move the discussion of downloadable packs from the main text to here).

Foo Pack

The Foo Pack is available from Foo Enterprises (link here, maybe?), and contains some of the most difficult tracks that have ever been programmed.

I just think that there are too many parenthesized things after some of these entries, and it would help to split them up. I would have already done it, but it's hard to tell what the various packs contain from some of the text. Hello, sorry I'm no familiar with contributing to wikipedia, feel free to edit this as you like:

I have made two edits to the Wipeout page.

1) Added info about Wipeout 3: SE's 4-player mode.

2) Deleted the comment about Wipeout 2097 being regarded as the best in the series. This statement has no evidence to back it up and I disagree with it because Wipeout 3 SE has everything its predecessor has and more: 4-player mode; superior graphics; more modes; analogue control; most of the 2097 tracks and a lot more besides.

Another improvement to the page would be to clarify that 2097 and perhaps the original offered analogue control through that weird Namo twisty controller. It's just that Wipeout 3 offered better control through the superior Sony analogue controller Dual Shock.

WOXL "soundtrack" album

I just added the WOXL "soundtrack" album listing to the page (the audio-only CD, with some different artists and tracks). Do you folks think it really belongs here? It kinda makes the listings look crummy, IMO. I can't find it anywhere else in the wikipedia, so it probably belongs somewhere, but do you think it should be another page? — Wwagner 00:22, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

When we mention 2097's /XL's Soundtrack we should do the same for original WipE'out" and the Pure soundtrack. It's also good to see that you made a seperate article for 2097's /XL's Soundtrack, Wwagner, but then you should mention 2097 in the headline as well as XL, cause the game is better known as 2097 than as XL for most people, because it was just named XL in the US. — Sausehuhn 22:22, 16 March 2006 (CET)

All Music Guide and discogs.com have separate entries for Wipeout 2097, which appear to be the soundtrack album that was released by Virgin in the UK, where the game was known by that title. Split

I love the info that's provided about the Wipeout game series but seperate articles would be good. I could help split up the articles and have the format of those pages set to the WP:CVG standard. However, this page could still be used as the general approach of the series. You know, like changes that were made from the first to most recent game. An example of this would be like SSX which has info about the rest of the series on there. Douglasr007 07:13, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

It just doesn't seem like there's enough material to warrant a separate article for each game. The article isn't that long, there are redirects in place for most of the titles in the series to come to this article, and the formatting is mostly fine, though my splitting of the Wipeout Pure expansion packs out from the main Pure entry made a nasty jumble out of that section. Moving the expansion packs to a separate article would assuredly be beneficial, and since I made that mess, I'll do that cleanup later today. — Wwagner 14:34, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
I think they should be split; they may all have the same name but they are all different in their own rights. Perhaps this page could be used for similarities, or the basics of the series. JD 16:56, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Amiga?

2097 was out on the Amiga? Are we sure? I doubt more than a tiny percentage of Amigas had the grunt (Read: 3D graphics hardware with a usable API) to render it. There were certainly Wipeout-alikes towards the end of the Amiga, and it was widely desired, but I'm pretty sure it was never released on that platform.

The Amiga version was the last version of Wipeout2097 to be realised and the only one in the series to be realised on Amiga so far. It's for AGA machines with the PPC chip only and yes you need a very powerful machine to run it properly but it is a faithful conversion. YourPTR! (talk) 14:31, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

This has all been very confusing for me, as I had a game very much like this on my Amiga, but it could not have been any later than 1991, as I sold my Amiga then. This is really doing my head in, as I could swear it was called WipeOut. The graphics wre simple, and the Amiga version was much better then the ST version, as usual. What the hell was it?? Ah, it was PowerDrome [1] Somebody should mention that WipeOut was inspired by PowerDrome. The Wikipedia page for it does not mention that it came out in 1985 for the Amiga. Jason404 (talk) 11:02, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Asserting any such inspiration is inappropriate without a reliable resource. That one personally reminds you of the other is original research, and not appropriate for an encyclopedia. Xihr (talk) 06:42, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I had not heard of Powerdrome but it intrigues me. I cleaned up its Wikipedia page a bit but it still needs a lot more writing. Please jump in. The Atari ST original and PS2/Xbox update were on seperate pages - Powerdrome and Power Drome respectively - so I merged them. I hope that's OK. - RubyJester (talk) 15:57, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

There is another game for the Amiga called Wipe Out - a Tron-style 3D Snakes game where the line your craft makes becomes a wall for the other player. [2] Pretty, but best played by looking at the tiny map in the corner. Not a good sign for a game! - RubyJester (talk) 15:57, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Wikiproject?

Presuming you mean clips of the soundtracks, you don't own the copyright to those songs, so that would be copyright infringement. Xihr (talk) 22:30, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Expand tag

I've added an "expand" tag to the article. I've started a history section but it could use quite a bit of fleshing out, brief detail about each game release, etc. A "gameplay" section would also be useful, just to describe what the series is generally about, recurring features, the unique art and sound design and all that. Game Section restored

Games section listing the various games in the series had disappeared, so I took a decent version back from the history.

I removed the 'needs expansion' tag from the section, but there is still room for information on the differences between the versions etc.

Why is the page called Wipeout (series) instead of Wipeout (video game series)? As it there is not a film, board game, 'Wipeout on Ice' etc, it is not really a general media franchise. Wipeout (video game series) would be much clearer. Not all games are video games. Perhaps there's a policy on this? Centrepull (talk) 12:07, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Tracks

I added the names of the tracks for all the games that were missing them. Edited the track information in Wipeout HD Fury to make it easier to read and understand. Cockpit view

Answer: Sure, it is! Maybe you define "cocpit view" a different way. The cockpit view in Wip3out is a view from inside the craft - you can see computers etc. This was never before in any WipEout. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.140.40.193 (talkcontribs)

Excuse me that I'm writing it here, as I haven't found any e-mail I could write on.

This message is about Wipeout HD & Fury.

My name is Peter - I'm from Poland - PSN ID : Wreckedge

I'm a big fan of Wipeout.


I chose to play on motion sensor & inside view :

3 problems:

1. Barrel rolls : sometimes the screen is turning around without moving forward - so I'm loosing time - precious of course :) - check it pls.

2. Motion sensor Barrel rols timing - differs from what is in guide : some times I have to do moves LRL or RLR before even i'm in the air to obtain successful barrel roll making. - enlarge the timing for inside view or motion sensor on Bluetooth (there is a gradation of delay: no cable, inside view, motion sensor----> faster BR moves or unsuccessful BR - or impossible)

As You can see on score boards & lap times I'm not new to Wipeout HD & Fury.

If You would extend the time of successful barrel roll for that kind of option it would be much more fair play - I do understand that it's a problem with total counting & performance of PS3 but when I'm in the air for 2 sec - and make moves for BR - and the ship is just twitching after another 1,5 sec it makes me nervous :). I'm in 8'th position on Anulpha Pass Rev Flash - the double BR on the S curve with hoop is almost impossible to make with SS to the right for the first BR, although I can do it with SS to the left - I'm loosing time for it - Just an example.

3. On motion sensor & Inside view on few tracks : Metropia rev, Chenghou rev, & more - after BoostBR - hitting a wall ends with recovery - I mean of course hitting a wall inside track (with nose down) - ???

  Ideas of Improvement :

POOL OF PICK UPS - most important - many of us - players are swearing when going through whole race without a single Turbo or Quake. Idea is simple : if we have pick ups by lottery let it be from a pool which reset to another same pool after finishing the previous. The pool is same for all the players and the pick up is choose-able.

Example : We have Turbo, Shield , Autopilot, Missile, Rockets, Cannon, Mines, Quake, Bomb and Plasma.

Pool would be 3 Turbo 2 Shields 2 Autopilots, 2 Missiles, 3 Rockets, 3 Cannons, 3 Mines, 2 Quakes, 2 Bombs - TOTAL: 22 Pick ups within the pool. You will have it shown in the upper part of the screen on a belt, which You can move by a button. So there is no situation like one guy is having 6 Quakes on one eliminator race and the other one have none. Same with Turbo. U cant race with one who have 6 turbo and you have none, even if You're better. Impossible and depriving. FAIR PLAY is important.

The other idea is to make even the pool a lottery for a single lap. But it always the same for all player taking part. Crossing the start line changes the pool. The preferred sequence of it can be changed in menu section out of race. So you can have different options, like: (1st will be turbo for sure :)) 1.Turbo, Rockets, Missile, Quake, Bomb, autopilot, Mines, shield etc. 2. Turbo, Quake, Shield, Missile, Autopilot etc, etc.

Pick ups proposed

STEALTH - Pick up - Gives invisibility for 5 sec - visibility like water stains on the invisible ship when hitting a wall or other ship or being attacked with any weapon.

LASER - just a laser - You have to be precise to use it on target
