Assessment Report

[edit]
  1. Article needs to be massively expanded using Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements as a guide.
  2. It should make use of sections, using Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements as a guide.
  3. Photos need to be added.
  4. References and Citations are crucial for wikipedia, and so these must be added as the article is expanded. Make sure that as many as possible are "in-line" citations.(See WP:References, WP:V, and WP:CITE for guidance.)

Trivia

[edit]

Ian-metz continues to add information on a couple of pubs and a Chinese in the area. This is neither notable nor encyclopedic. Does anyone agree or disagree? If the consensus is that it shouldn't be in the article, continuing to reinsert it will be considered an act of vandalism. Nev1 (talk) 16:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't be there unless notable for some reason. The village I live in has an article which manages fine without mentioning the local pubs, post office, shops and café. (The way things are going I doubt if many of them will be open that much longer, anyway). Where I have come across articles for localities I know, they often have lists of long defunct businesses, which never had any references anyway. Very very few Chinese takeaways would warrant listing in an encyclopedia! Wikipedia is not a directory. In terms of third party verifiable sources it is pretty hard to provide any for corner shops or cafés, and once Business A has a mention then Business B will add themselves!
I would refer again to WP:UKCITIES which gives us some very useful pointers to encyclopedic content which we should be adding.

I agree with Nev1 and have removed pub and chinese take-away info from the Haslington page as consistency is important (to say that Dick Turpin MAY have visited the pub is hardly unique or of value, half the pubs in Humberside make that claim and in any case such terms are known as weasel words in WP:UKCITIES). Not sure why Nev1 keeps deleting my information on walks etc. though, as he himself asked if there were any on a previous post. He obviously doesn't live in the area, or he would know about the South Cheshire Way and canal loop walk. I shall keep working on the Haslington page, it is full of trivia and unsubstantiated content. Comments welcome. --Ian-metz (talk) 13:42, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please carry on improving the article, as I agree that some content is not appropriate, and may have been added by myself when I first started contributing to wikipedia. The claim about Dick Turpin was sourced, but I agree that it still was not worthy to be included. I think the information about the walks and so on should be included so long as they are adequately referenced, and I thought there were adequate references for them (though I'm not sure whether they were given in the article, as I was aware of them on the Cheshire county website.) My intention was when the weather improves to take photographs of some features of these walks and consider adding them, where appropriate.  DDStretch  (talk) 16:27, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I linked/referenced the walks to the relevant articles already published in Wikipedia, as Nev1 would have seen when he deleted them. Do I now have permission to restore them? --Ian-metz (talk) 09:21, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia articles cannot be used to verify information in other wikipedia articles, and so if you wish to re-enter the information, you need to find and provide references that can be found in other reliable sources, separate from wikipedia. So, if the other wikipedia articles contain information that verifies what you want to enter in these articles, just reprodiuce the references here (suitably formatted, and so on.) I think information about the various walks you mention should be available somewhere on the Cheshire county or related websites. For example this webpage gives information about one of the walks that could be relevant on one of the articles you are editing, and there may be more on the same website (Discover Cheshire.)  DDStretch  (talk) 09:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I had assumed that, as the Cheshire Ring wiki article was itself sourced, that those sources would still be relevant to my mentions of the Cheshire Ring; I guess you are saying that I need only cut-and-paste those links to authenticate my contributions? --Ian-metz (talk) 11:18, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's right. Cut and paste the relevant references that verify the exact infgormation you want to add to the article. If they are not already, you may wish to make use of the various citation templates to format the references appropriately ({{citation}}, etc.)  DDStretch  (talk) 12:08, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
