Where was she actually born?

[edit]

In 1893 there was a South African Republic, but referring to that as "South Africa" is confusing. So if she was born there we ought to say she was born in the South African Republic. If she was born in Cape Colony, the Colony of Natal, the Zulu Kingdom (which remained a distinct unit until 1897), Orange Free State or British Bechuanaland (which would be merged with Cape Colony in 1895) we should state that. Our articles mention of birth should reflect the de facto geopolitical reality on the ground at the time an event occured.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:01, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

According to L. Rousseau in The Dark Stream: The Story of Eugène Marais, p. 505, Winifred de Kok was born in Bethlehem in the Free State. (I found this in Google Books.) I will edit the text accordingly. GdB (talk) 15:06, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
