What is the origin of the name of this town? There is no such name as Wilmont, it is a commonly misspelled name. The Wilmot Proviso being famous in American history I would not be surprised if that is the origin. If there was an actual Wilmont, that would be interesting too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.55.84.41 (talk) 21:07, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
An interesting question on the origin of the town's name. Ray Crippen, retired former editor of the Worthington DAILY GLOBE, the area's daily newspaper, would be someone who likely knows the origin of the town's name. Some year's back, I believe he wrote a booklet on the origin of place names in Nobles County, wherein Wilmont lies. I will route your question to him by snail mail and hopefully receive an answer for you down the road at some point--unless another reader has an answer for you sooner! SWMNPoliSciProject
According to A.P Rose's History of Nobles County (p 100), two factions argued over the name of a proposed township in Nobles County. One wanted it named Willemut, and other Lamont. They compromised in Willmont on December 12, 1878. When a town was built, one L was dropped from the name of the town to distinguish it from the township. Somewhere along the line, the double-L in Willmont township was also dropped. Thus, we have the town of Wilmont in the township of Wilmont. Always wondered about this as my middle name is Wilmot after the Wilmot provisio dude... Ray.lowry
