Thanks for starting page

[edit]

You ROCK! I thought I would have to do this. And am a little medically incapacited. But you did it before me! I started a wikilink to Wilmer W. Tanner as I see that on more of his papers, but this is fine. Merci becoups! TCO (talk) 02:34, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I should be done translating it soon. If you can find references, this would be great. :) - [CharlieEchoTango] 02:36, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. I think there are a couple profiles on him. And I know his biggest review papers also.TCO (talk) 02:43, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How did you know our problem and who are you? This is so cool.TCO (talk) 02:43, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just came across your message on the help desk and since I speak both French and English, I thought I'd do my good action for the day :P - [CharlieEchoTango] 02:47, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Am I pushing my luck?

[edit]

Is it possible to get the page as Wilmer W. Tanner? That's how all his papers and books call him out. It's more common search. If not, no biggie, I can request a move apres the translation! TCO (talk) 02:49, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's possible but I would advise keeping the full name, but I created a redirect for search purposes. [CharlieEchoTango] 03:16, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good solution.TCO (talk) 03:19, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some references

[edit]

Just plopping the basic stuff down. Will be made into conforming refs by me or my colleagues.

  • Copea profile: [1]
  • Papers transferred to BYU, some bio info also, COOL tiger pic: [2]
  • Autobiography (self published): [3]
  • A bunch of books he was a co-author on: [4]

(also just in case you're worried, he has like 130 papers and some species discovered, so incoming links can be created to show notability)TCO (talk) 03:03, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BYU is in Utah

[edit]

Ha! Only one BYU. Already a benefit from getting this old fellow back to his "home langue". Just leave it blue linked. Everyone in the US knows where BYU is and for other readers, the blue link suffices. And in the context of his biography is pretty obvious. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TCO (talkcontribs) 03:10, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, but the BYU I read about on WP is one in Utah, while the frwiki article says he attended BYU in Kansas? So which one is it? [CharlieEchoTango] 03:17, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Il y a seulement un BYU, et cet universitat est dans UTAH. Le wiki francias ne c'est pas vrai. Utah is right. Just fix the French wiki. There is NO BYU in Kansas.TCO (talk) 03:23, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good, I fixed the french wiki accordingly. Merci! - [CharlieEchoTango] 03:33, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done

[edit]

Done! At the best of my abilities, of course. Someone will show up shortly and do some copy-editing. I'll let you (or one of your collegues) the task of referencing the article. Cheers and good luck with your medical condition :). [CharlieEchoTango] 03:32, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect.TCO (talk) 03:39, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We'll get it squared away

[edit]

sorry not quicker on the notes formats and all. Have a brain illness. But put a note to my colleagues and we will get it a little better, soon.TCO (talk) 04:06, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's fine, take your time. The tag is just a reminder, nothing urgent or anything ;). [CharlieEchoTango] 04:07, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks fast copy editors!

[edit]

Amazing how fast help arrived. I gotta figure out what made that happen. Maybe pump placement every time I start a new article?  ;) (Don't tell the other kids or my secret will be ruined!) Seriously, amazing so much rapid assistance. Very different from what I'm used to when I make a new article.TCO (talk) 04:09, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To do (feel free to add)

[edit]

My impression on what needs to be done:

1. Add more facts from Historical Perspective (get copy of full article) and BYU papers refs.

2. Finish reffing anything in article covered by these two, but not cited yet.

3. Little more structure and proofing.

4. Write to Daines at BYU and ask for an image CCSA, preferably the TIGER!:: Wrote to ask for permission.TCO (talk) 01:34, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Got permission and all and uploaded the image. Asking for help at TVP on Commons to see if someone can get the higher image (we have access to it, but I could not figure it out) and crop and all and submit for a featured picture. Please feel free to help.TCO (talk) 20:36, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Linking to full resolution image. If someonw wants to try restoring it (dust) and taking to FP,feel free.TCO (talk) 21:47, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

5. figure out how to validate the 130 papers (some citation service)?

6. ILL the autobiography. See what should be added.

7. Works sections with most prominent works. (I guess favoring those that are monographs and the like. I am familiar with one of his Mexico monographs (the nonsnake one).

8. Is it OK style to call BYU, BYU? Maybe once in parens first? Is common usage and we end up repeating long name a lot otherwise.

9. Get some image(s) of a creature named after him, or that he discovered.

TCO (talk) 08:11, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

8. I'd say the first time use the full name with ' (BYU) ' and then BYU would be fine. ;) - [CharlieEchoTango] 08:20, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "130"

[edit]

That might be from the Copeia that is hidden. Sounds like that sort of thing. And could include some obscure pubs. That said, I get 83 in google scholar whether doing Wilmer Tanner or Wilmer W Tanner. "W W Tanner" returned 89, seemingly all from him. I did not check all, though. "W Tanner" returns thousands and obviously from other people.

And on the "15", I bet that is Copeia also. For that, it would be really nice if we could get the list of them and have it in article.TCO (talk) 08:22, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just checking the incoming wiki pages, lots of snakes called out that Tanner classified first (all subspecies). Could make a list of those (or prose, I suppose). Callouts don't give specic refs, but ther is enough info so we can track it down (date and coauthor).TCO (talk) 10:27, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why are dates messed up on Google books?

[edit]

See here. They have Tanner's papers from 1940 including his work with the Atomic Energy Commission. No. I don't think so! Have seen these date mistakes recently with other people too. You can't trust their citation, but have to look at the source itself. Jstor is much more accurate with stuff like this.TCO (talk) 10:35, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

radioative stuff

[edit]

good to see that coming in. He has a monograph on Google books on test site reptile study. So we can probably source that he "did" work there.TCO (talk) 00:35, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I submitted the photo for FP. Could please use help on the caption and alt text, not displaying right. Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Wilmer W. Tanner

category adding

[edit]

Added some more categories. Not really sure how to search and all that (although read the directions). Would think a category for Mormon person would make sense (not meaning it positive or negative, neutral). But I don't find such an animal. Anyhow, got a little more on professions and then BYU as he is prominent there, papers housed, etc.TCO (talk) 01:41, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know

[edit]

This looks like a Did you know article. Is there some interesting fact that is referenced? Regards, SunCreator (talk) 22:19, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah we did build it up fast. I think the best DYKs have some sort of really fasinating "hook" and we are lacking that now. Probably something related to number of species he identified or maybe the radioactive reptile work at the Nevada test site (just sounds kinda spooky cool, will draw people). To get it would need to research a bit more. (The stuff is out there, pretty easy to come by, just that's what needs to be done.) Thank you for the attaturtle!TCO (talk) 22:40, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Scanned directions. Could do something on the museum as well. Doesn't seem as compelling, but photo would be closely related and could let the photo carry it. I donno...TCO (talk) 23:56, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

status update

[edit]

got tiger pic image improved and in for a Featured Picture. Will link to new version soon.

Need to get new pic cropped. Was kind of the best one to pic in terms of being one that he worked with, not something "off" or from a different region.

Getting together a list of all the species, he identified. 17 snakes (at least). It is kind of an unholy mess right now as I cut and pasted from snake articles. Want to get the actual inline refs. Also still has date-linking! And links embedded inside the name of the snakes. In my sandbox.

Got the Copeia article! Reading it tonight.

TCO (talk) 06:11, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I read the Copeia paper and it serves as a source for the 15 and the 130. Will probably go with that. Have been finding some slamandar and lizard species (and a genus) that he classified on wiki, but it is really confusing. Don't have a good off wiki list of them and even just using wiki as a pointer is hard as we lack stuff or articles don't all have references. Probably give up on giving a list of all the stuff he classified. Maybe cite some of it or...something.TCO (talk) 11:16, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Move request

[edit]

Requested move

[edit]

Wilmer TannerWilmer W. Tanner – Non-controversial move. Tanner is listed this way in all his citations and books. Most of our Wikilinks come to this usage also. Am main writer and plan to work on the bio more after the move.TCO (talk) 17:05, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Since this move is uncontroversial and the target page is already occupied, request this move at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Uncontroversial request. An administrator will take care of it. We don't need a weeklong discussion about this. Goodvac (talk) 17:29, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Moved move note to the other section.TCO (talk) 17:39, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BLP no longer

[edit]

Wilmer has died. I had tried to get in contact to talk turtles, but was told he was pretty far gone at the time. I guess in context of the article, there will be info from obits now. Also categorization.
