I've tried to avoid saying that he was "English", "Welsh", "Norman" or "Breton". He was probably born to a Norman French-speaking household of Breton descent, in a family that was involved in the "Norman" invasion (that is, led by the Duke of Normandy but involving people of other "nationalities"), who conquered England. He became established in an area that was (and is) on the borders between England and Wales - in the Welsh Marches, outside the direct control of the kings of England at that time - but which is now in Wales (at least, Monmouth is). "Anglo-Norman" seems to me to be the least inappropriate categorisation in the circumstances. Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:03, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
