Perhaps it shoud be introduced into the text, but the "Dictionary of National Biography" (link) claims that Wales accompanied Cook on his third voyage. He didn't and sources do point out this error - Wales was by that time teaching at the Royal Mathematical School and was, for example, observing the Solar eclipse of June 24, 1778 from there (report to the Royal Society), while Cook was exploring the west coast of Canada.
