Suggestions for improvement
[edit]Hi William. I'll outline some suggestions for improving this article so that it's ready to be moved over!
- Sections - Currently you have a large amount of same level headings. You've done these by using single equals signs either side of the heading like so: == Early years ==. The huge amount makes it a little hard to read though so to improve this, it will be a good idea to make some general headings like 'Personal life', 'Businesses', 'Politics', and make the current headings subheadings of those. To make a subheading, use an extra equals sign either side of the heading text, like so: ===Early life===. Dividing the article up like this will make it easier for people to find the information they want. (I've changed your headings from single equals to double equals as this is the usual way of doing top headings). You could also probably remove some of the headings while doing this, some aren't that necessary!
- Paragraphs - A lot of the content of the article is single line paragraphs. Try to incorporate these into larger paragraphs to make the article look and read better.
- Duplicated references - A lot of your references are used multiple times. But to use a reference again there's no need to write out the full reference again! Wiki has a nice function whereby you can name a reference the first time you use it, and then just source that reference later in the page by calling that name. As an example, you use the reference <ref>E. Kimbark MacColl with Harry H. Stein, Merchants, Money and Power: The Portland Establishment, 1843-1913. The Georgian Press, 1988</ref> twice in the same paragraph. Rather than write it out twice, write it out like this the first time:<ref name="Money and Power">E. Kimbark MacColl with Harry H. Stein, Merchants, Money and Power: The Portland Establishment, 1843-1913. The Georgian Press, 1988</ref> and then the second time you want to use it just write <ref name="Money and Power"/>, and it will use the previous reference again! Just change the name of the reference for each one and you won't have any trouble. It tidies up the references section a bit too!
I also made some general little changes here and there which you can see in the edit history, no need to worry about them, just some general formatting and manual of style things that I wouldn't have expected you to know! Hope this helps. Samwalton9 (talk) 18:34, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
The above seems to refer to a different article years ago
[edit]It was addressed then. This seems to have migrated here in error. Not certain how it got to this article?William Macadam (talk) 19:04, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
