- ... to study medicine at Tulane University, and later to found the Hopital Albert Schweitzer Haiti in 1953, ...
bcz the NYT obit says
- ... medical degree in 1954 at the age of 44. Two years later, the Albert Schweitzer Hospital opened its doors.
I'll bet something worthy of mention happened in '53, and got misunderstood in writing the earlier version. That event should be tracked down and added.
