Birthplace
[edit]Although his older sketch in the original Dictionary of National Biography (1899) states he was born at "Bamborough" (ie Bamburgh), the revised version in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004) gives it as Nottingham.Cloptonson (talk) 13:56, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
Timing of Death - Differing information found
[edit]An investigation of reports of his death and funeral in the Shrewsbury Chronicle newspaper (which then covered mid-Wales) revealed that the timing of his death differs from that given by both the DNB and ODNB, the latter of which states: at the conclusion of his charge to the grand jury at Welshpool on 12 March 1860, he was seized with apoplexy. He died the following day.. (ie died 13 March). However the chronology as indicated by the newspaper's report (Wednesday 14 March 1860) is:
Monday 12 March - Watson arrived in Welshpool to attend the Montgomeryshire Spring Assizes, whose session opens that day then is adjourned to next morning. Tuesday 13 March - Session resumes in the morning. After giving his charge to the Grand Jury he is taken ill at his bench. He was taken to his lodging opposite Welshpool Town Hall where he died at one o'clock; in a quarter of an hour or twenty minutes after the commencement of the [apoplectic] attack, Baron Watson was no more.
Therefore, both the conclusion of the charge and his death happened the same day, and one day later than the DNB's/ODNB's date. The variation may have arisen through the DNB's article being published in 1899, nearly 40 years after the events. Belated signature.Cloptonson (talk) 14:22, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
