There appears to be a book or pamphlet or a magazine article by a John Y Simon called "Lincoln's valet" or "Lincoln and His Valet" in Echoes, February, 1964. It is not available online. Several other books mention him, and there is a lot of traffic in Lincoln's collected papers, which I assume are in Springfield. I found some loose bits of text, including this one that says a William H Johnson was paid $37.75 to whitewash the White House in 1861, wouldn't it be great if it was the same guy?
