Untitled
[edit]This entry said that Nelson was the only naval officer to become a major general during the Civil War. That is not correct. Samuel P Carter became a MG in the union army and later became a Rear Admiral in the Navy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.31.203.167 (talk) 02:36, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Nice article and worthy of fine treatment
[edit]Today I added a brief lead paragraph which explained the subject's importance in an encyclopedic way. This contribution was deleted. I respect this subject matter and have zero bones to pick with the editor who created and built this article. However, I would remind the editor about WP:OWN and encourage that user to look at similar biographies, especially ones which have achieved GA (ex: James Longstreet, Francis Amasa Walker, Zenas Bliss), A-class (ex: John S. McCain, Jr., Smedley Butler, Douglas MacArthur) or FA status (ex: James Bowie, George B. McClellan, Simon Bolivar Buckner). If I can be helpful, such as in copyediting, please discuss this here. I see numerous grammatical and coding changes which would improve. I actually preferred the version prior to my first edit over the version as of this datestamp. I hope my edit summary (that this page needed copyediting) didn't ruffle feathers. Such was not my intention. BusterD (talk) 22:31, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Lead cleanup
[edit]Note that my last revert didn't mean I am opposed to cleaning up the lead. I just think it needs to be done more carefully. The last cleanup seemed to remove too much material, left a sentence fragment, and used the legal term "murder" to describe the killing even though there was no conviction for such. Britmax has noted that no one seems to know what I "wish to see happen." The work that was done restore the integrity of the article vanished when I tried to post and nothing can be done to fix that.
It appears that "Bully" Nelson is one of those characters who will always attract a host of people who want to defend his murderer and forum like Wikipedia will draw them like flies. Wikipedia is simply not the place for serious academic work and it is time for me to retire. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quarterdeckgeneral (talk • contribs) 17:20, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
