There are a lot of claims here, but a notable lack of specificity. The fact is that, while Peoria was a butt of jokes on the vaudeville circuit, there is no documented use of "will it play in Peoria?" before Ehrlichman's use in 1969. It was not in fact used in A Night at the Opera, and the literal references to Peoria in Horatio Alger's Five Hundred Dollars have nothing to do with the phrase.
