I asked my father, a Wilkie born in Perth area, about the Wilkie myth and his reponse was:

'S true that they called the spirit of a burial mound a wilkie in the far north of Scotland. But not at all similar to bigfoot. More like a barrow wight, I'd say. And would not be surprised if derived from Indo-European word for 'wolf': *vilku.

He also has not heard/seen a Wilkie tartan. It would be nice to dig that up, if it's not a typo.

It was this Wilkey's understanding that while the Wilkies/Wilkeys have claim to, or a right to wear, the MacDonald tartan (being a part of that clan), the sept itself has not had a separate tartan. Further, it was my understanding that Wilkie was the Scots diminutive of William.

wilkie does have its own tartan —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.106.221.22 (talk) 16:29, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not a German last name, only Scottish

There are no German origin Wilkies here in Germany. And I highly doubt that the German name Wilke is related. My father in law was a Wilkie with ancestors in the Dundee area. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:810B:161F:DB84:151C:BF9F:5A6E:B729 (talk) 23:42, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
