Represents Kaiser What should have been a brilliant military spectacle yesterday, when the King unveiled the statue in Whitehall to the memory of the ]ate Duke of Cambridge, was marred by rain. In his speech the King referred to his revered relative as " the soldiers' friend " whose " one motto " was ,to do his duty to his sovereign and his country. The occasion was rendered specially interesting bv the presence of Field Marshal von Hahnke (representing the German Emperor), and six officers of the Von Goeben Regiment, of which the late Duke was colonel-in-chief. The German officers, headed by Field Marshal von Hahnke, stood out from the rest by reason of their helmets and light grey cloaks. His Majesty, in a clear voice, that could be heard right across the road, said

I am here to thank you, as chairman of the committee charged with the erection of this memorial to my revered relative, the Duke of Cambridge, for asking me to unveil it. It is enough to say that the appreciation m which he was held, not only by his friends and brother officers, but by the Army generally, inspired the project to erect to his memory a suitable memorial. This is has been done by the officers past and present of the Army, by his personal friends, and by members of the City companies. The statue which I am about to unveil will be committed to the care of the Westminster City Council. 9 I can only say that those who pass it will be led to remember that the late Duke was the soldiers' friend during a period of nearly half a century, when he held high rank in the Army, and endeared himself to all ranks. He had but one motto— that was to do his duty to his sovereign and his country. to add one word more before I unveil the Imperial, and that is how deeply I appreciate the honor which the German Emperor has conferred upon me by sending the distinguished Field Marshal von -Hahnke and a deputation from the Von Qoeben Regiment to show their appreciation of the late Duke by taking part in today s ceremony.

Field Marshal Von Hahnke one of the best known soldiers in Germany died today. Field Marshal Von Hahnke was known practically to everyone in Berlin where he was born in 1833and served most of his time in the regiment of the guard or the General Staff. He was a great friend f the Emperor Frederick with whom he went through the wars against Austria in 1865, and against France in 1870-1871. He also saw service in the war against Denmark in 1864. He was Chief Aide de Camp to the present Emporer.
