Extra info

I've access to Nintendo's press site, so I have quite a bit of info that could be added, but I'm not exactly a Wikipedia veteran. In fact, I struggled to work out how to do this... Anyway, here's some information:

Tennis(1-4 players): Players grab the controller like a racket and swing- the game will register forehands, backhands, volleys, lobs, slices, spin, and power depending on how fast the user swings and at what angle. Don't worry about moving around the court to get to the ball- the game automatically moves players into position

Baseball(1-2 players): Grip the controller like a bat and swat fastballs out of the park in a home run derby. Timing and bat speed will make all the difference between going yard and whiffing, so keep an eye on the ball and swing for the fences. In the two player game, one player pitches and the other bats.

Golf(1 player): Step up to the tee, hole the controller like a golf club and swing naturally to smack the ball onto the green. The harder players swing the club, the further the ball will fly, so be sure to take some practice swings before going for the pin. After reaching the green, line up putts carefully, practice the stroke and try to hole out.

Additional games may be added to the Wii sports group --The last sheikah 13:12, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

That aeroplane game shown at the early tech demos is now confirmed to a Wii Sports title. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 18:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Release Date

What is the source saying it will be a launch game? I haven't seen any site mention this. Spyke 02:11, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

The first link to IGN's running blog of E3 makes a mention about Wii Sports being launched alongside the Wii as announced by Iwata.
(10:31:31 AM): Wii Sports -- Includs tennis, baseball and golf in one package. Will be available on launch day.
Jgamekeeper 06:24, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Is there a specific reason the link for aerobatics just leads to a picture of the classic controller? Where was it meant to lead? --The last sheikah 13:12, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

It leads to a gallery. I couldn't link to the exact picture, but pressing "Next image" a couple of times links to the source. smurrayinchester (User), (Talk) 13:15, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Wii Motor Sports

It appears that there will be two different games, Wii Sports, as well as Wii Motor Sports. Wii Motor Sports will include at least Airplane and Jet Ski games. Source: IGN Should two articles be created for each? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.62.112.147 (talkcontribs) 02:06, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd say it's probably premature to do so, as the article is a little barren as it is. Probably best to keep the info in this article, and make this about the whole Wii Sports franchise. I'm sure that as we learn more about the games, there will come a time to split off articles on the individual games, but I don't think that time is now. Then again, new articles have been started with less information. Take Mario Paint Wii, for instance. Dancter 02:47, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Airplane is already on Motor Sports, so ill take it off the list. P.S. Sorry, i wasnt logged in when i made the comment so it showed up as a ip the first time.Toasty! | Available at your local store 02:29, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Games included

Regarding the line saying there might be up to 30 games included in Wii sports, I think that's probably safe to say by now is not correct. Take a look at http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/?p=1390 for what apparently is the final box art. The only games shown are the 5 already shown by Nintendo; boxing, tennis, golf, baseball and bowling. It might also be a good idea to include the box art in the article. Glassius 01:26, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Ok then that's a solid idea. However, it is possible they could be unlockables. And if so, it makes sense why there would only be 5 games on the cover, as they may be unlockable from the start. When the game comes out, we can surely tell (i will get the Wii on launch, so i may edit the article on that day.) EDIT: Also, if airplane is in there in the final product, then there's a possibility of more games.Toasty! | Available at your local store 01:14, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

They don't have to show every game on the box art. Take Clubhouse Games. You only see ten items on there, but there are actually 42 games. Of course, about half of them are card games, but other games aren't shown at all. So we can't just go off on the box art. Hbdragon88 02:47, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

There is actually 20 games on Wii Sports if you count training. Mario Kart DS 95 17:48, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Article for Wii series games?

Such as Wii sports, Wii play, ect. It seems to be forming it's own series!—Preceding unsigned comment added by Zazaban (talkcontribs)

Bundled with the Wii indefinitely

Do we knoe if wii sports will be bundled with the wii for the life of the console, or is this more a tempoary promotion to get users acquainted at launch? If so, then wouldn't wii sports potentially be the best selling game ever.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.189.131.183 (talkcontribs)

My guess would be that it will stop in a few months. TJ Spyke 01:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
This game probably wouldn't sell if it weren't bundled with the Wii. -Power Slave 05:31, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Very much untrue. In Japan, it's one of, if not the, best selling game for the Wii (also was the first Seventh Gen game to break 1M sales I think) -- Phoeba WrightOBJECTION! 13:53, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Based on the recent quarterly data,[1][2] Wii Sports sells at nearly a 1:3 ratio to Wii consoles in Japan. Dancter 18:51, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Also, DS qualifies as seventh gen, so it beat it a long time ago with SM64DS. - A Link to the Past (talk) 18:42, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure what comment is being addressed. What does it matter what generation the DS qualifies as? Dancter 21:03, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Who I am addressing is obvious - someone said that Wii Sports is the first million selling seventh gen game, even though DS is seventh gen. Although I see that s/he probably meant Japan, in which Nintendogs was the first. - A Link to the Past (talk) 22:52, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
I see it now. I missed Feba's parenthetical the first couple times I read through the section. The placement of your comment threw me off because it didn't seem to have anything to do with what I was saying, which is that Wii Sports does alright in Japan. Dancter 00:12, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I think it would. Take a look at Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!, it's done extremely well and I suspect Wii Sports would do the same (assuming they charged only $20 for it). TJ Spyke 05:40, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Usually, games are bundled with a system for a limited time. That happened with Metroid Prime Hunters:First Hunt and Mario Kart DS on the DS, for example. Wii Sports should no longer be bundled with the Wii for a month. Japan became a first-world country after a bomb wiped out everyone. We Argentinians only managed to get two dictatorships and 10 million of poor people since WWII. 21:26, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Yeah! And it's now nearly a year since Wii was released and no signs of halting the bundle!88.109.179.70 17:33, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Not the first inclusion since the SNES

...the first game included with the launch of a Nintendo console since Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991.

This simply isn't true. The North American Virtual Boy shipped with "Mario's Tennis". —Matthew0028 03:37, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

The Virtual Boy is considered a portable system. TJ Spyke 03:42, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
...and...? If you're trying to imply that a portable system isn't a console, according to the title of the article Handheld game console, a portable system is still a *console* (of the "handheld game" variety). —Matthew0028 09:05, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Handheld/portable systems are not really console's, despite what that article says (since whoever started the article is mistaken). TJ Spyke 23:02, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
A) Evidence, please?
B) 's does not a plural make —Matthew0028 01:01, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
A handheld is not a console, in this situation at least. It's common knowledge. Scepia 04:51, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
It isn't true anyway since Nintendo 64 launched with Super Mario 64. ~ PHDrillSergeant...§ 02:55, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
... but wasn't bundled with it. Reverted to SNES one, since Virtual Boy is a bit controversive. 83.7.211.212 00:09, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I didn't do my homework either - SMW wasn't bundled with the SNES. The last Nintendo console (handhelds aside) to be bundled witha a game in its default retail form was NES with its SMB, and that's obviously the point of this trivia, because it can't mean the first Mario game being a launch title since X (Wii Sports isn't a Mario game) and it can't mean first Nintendo launch title since X (all Nintendo consoles had Nintendo launch titles). It can only be the bundle trivia, and this means SMB and the NES. 83.7.211.212 00:31, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
You apparently don't know you video game history since Super Mario World WAS bundled with the Super NES (you probably also think that SMB was availble at the NES's launch). TJ Spyke 01:56, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
I redid my research. Although SM64 wasn't bundled with the N64 until AFTER its launch, Super Mario World did come bundled with the SNES. ~ PHDrillSergeant...§ 04:44, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

The VB is far from handheld so stop calling it that. It's also not a console in the 'connect-to-tv' sense. The controller is not built into the main system, making it like a console but unlike a handheld in that sense. The screen is built into the system much like handhelds, but unlike consoles. It is also important to note that it doesn't fit in your hands. It's best described as a hybrid of the two. There is an argument for those who feel that the VB is a console but it's pack-in game-ness is not importantly relevant to the article and no one really needs to debate this. SMW was the last originating pack-in on a system that can't be refuted as a system. --Thaddius 01:25, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Airplane?

Why is the Airplane game not mentioned in the article. It didn't make the final game, but was at E3 2006 along with Tennis, Golf and Baseball. U-Mos 19:57, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

It was never announced as part of the game. At E3, Wii Sports was just a series of tech demos and not an actual game yet. Airplane is part of the heavily rumored (and basically confirmed) Wii Motor Sports. TJ Spyke 23:04, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Nintendo World Event and Japanese Event

It says in the article that Wii Sports Bowling and Wii Sports Boxing were first revealed in the Nintendo World event but the Japanese event which also had these games was a night (in North America) before this event. So I need proof that the games were revealed in North America or Japan first. Frankyboy5 00:42, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Medals

I suggest that some information on medals may be included, also, out of personal interest, is it possible to get a silver medal? The Daein King 16:48, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Such as? I think information about what scores are necessary to gain them would constitute game advice, which is not allowed on WP. And yes, you can get silver medals. Geoff B 18:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Doh! Sorry, I was referring to platinum medals. Is it possible to get platinum medals? You don't need much information, just a little section on the medal system, or the PRO status, perhaps. Ashnard talk 14:04, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it's possible (although a bit of a challenge) to get platinum medals, and you're right, the ranking system and medals do deserve a mention. Geoff B 18:46, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

May I make a contribution regarding this? Ashnard talk 14:04, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

A brief explanation of medals is fine, but not a detailed guide. Wikipedia isn't a game guide, and having a list of what scores you need for a medal aren't needed. RobJ1981 18:51, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
I've added something about ranking, feel free to edit it . Ashnard talk 14:04, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Sounds from other games

According to the trivia section, "Sounds from the game Super Mario 64 and the Animal Crossing series can be heard during a game of Bowling, when zooming in on the pins for a closer look." and "Sounds from Super Smash Bros. are in the "Swing Control" training of Baseball." Can someone please elaborate? In bowling, when one zooms in, a similar sound to the camera sound from Mario 64 appears. Is this what it refers to? I've never played Animal Crossing, so I don't know if that's in there as well. It also says "sounds," as in plural, so are there multiple sounds from these games? With the baseball one, the closest I heard was that the croud cheering sounded somewhat like the crowd cheering from Smash Bros, but most crouds sound pretty much the same, right? Not to mention, without sources, both of these would seem to count as original research and should probably be removed. Anyone want to help? -Platypus Man | Talk 16:00, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

I think sounds could mean one from SM64 and one from AC. It's been a few weeks since I played Wii Sports, so I don't remember for sure. TJ Spyke 21:05, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Wii / Wii Sports Prices

In response to this edit [3], I would just like to point out that Amazon.co.jp lists Wii at 29,950 Yen. When converted to US dollars, it is $250.86. The Japanese price is not lower as a result of not including Wii Sports. Zomic_13 23:22, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

What?!?!

In the Lottery Show for the UK, there is a little tune/jingle during the show that sounds extremely similar to a jingle/tune made in Wii Sports. Is there anyone in who watches the show that can expand/corroborate upon the relationship? I won't add anything until it is confirmed, but it is an interesting piece of trivia. Ashnard talk 20:39, 28 April 2007 (UTC) I'm british and I never noticed the simalarity. Just a coincidence.88.109.179.70 17:36, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Homage to old skool games- should it be mentioned?

It's pretty obvious Nintendo is reinventing themselves with the Revolution, it's in the damn code name, and considering how many Wii games seem to be homages to classic NES titles, I was wondering if this should be given even a passing mention, or if it's too much in the field of OR. I mean, super paper mario takes a couple places in it's levels right out of Super Mario Bros., Excite Truck should be very obvious, and Wii Sports also seems to be references to classic NES games. Tennis (obvious), boxing is rather like Punch Out!, and i've read that the golf course is a replica of the holes from another NES game. I wouldn't be surprised if there's an NES baseball or bowling game with similarities. Even if this isn't very relevant, does anyone have links to people that go more in depth with this than I do? -- Phoeba WrightOBJECTION! 13:59, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

You are right that that is all OR, it would have to all be sourced. TJ Spyke 22:50, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Censorship

It should be mentioned in this article about the censorship on the Miis. The censorship was that in Boxing, the Miis that are of the Female Gender had to wear shirts unlike the Male Miis, due to the fact that women's breasts uncovered is pornographic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PJ Pete (talkcontribs)

Um, have you ever seen female boxing? It's not censorship since LEGITIMATE (i.e. licensed and legal) real female boxers wear shirts (or tops) as well. TJ Spyke 02:01, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Even if it was censorship (and needless to say, it isn't) there is a difference between pornography and nudity. Geoff B 02:49, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

in the reviews section

In the "reviews" section, it doesn't sate what Nintendo Power rated it. Could someone pease add this to the article please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.241.120.74 (talkcontribs)

I don't have the issue, but Game Rankings says NP gave it a 8.25/10. TJ Spyke 04:05, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Boxing health meter

"A health meter is displayed next to the boxers, which is identical to the one in Super Mario 64." - This is inaccurate for several reasons.

1. The health meter from mario 64 was slightly different around the edges to the one in Boxing. 2. The sections on health meter from Mario 64 changed colour as health was lost (blue --> green --> yellow --> red) in boxing they stay the same. 3. In mario 64 a piece of health is lost immediately - in boxing the piece can flask before being lost. They share a very similar design but they are definately not identical as stated. Wii Sports Experiment: Yay or Nay?

New version?

I have reports of there being different versions of Wii Sports. Specifically a new version of it with slightly different animations and pictures regarding Wiis with the new wii jackets packaged with the wiimote. Any other reports of this and this should be documented? 12.210.209.18 22:08, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

This is the original US version of Wii Sports. The baseball part begins with just going straight to the game and the catchers just hold up the ball if they catch it. The instructions at the begining are because it's a new player.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QSftdJd8ew This is from the different version. It shows the composition of the two teams before the game starts and when the catcher catches the ball they throw it to first base if it's an out. Clearly these are two distinct versions of Wii Sports. 12.210.209.18 06:05, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Interesting...but I'm not sure that we can add it solely based on YouTube videos. Also, what about the Wiimote jackets that you mentioned earlier? -Zomic13 06:28, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm a USA Wii user, and can confirm that there are indeed two different versions of Wii Sports. I bought my Wii in July 2007 and got a copy of the "old" version (it's got a 2006 copyright when the game boots up). Multiple friends who got Wiis over the last few months have the "new" version (copyright date is 2006-2007), although another who recently got a Wii (from retail) somehow got an "old" version of the software. The previous comments on the baseball game are indeed on target -- there are a multitude of minor changes to bowling and tennis, as well. I haven't tried out the "new" versions of golf or boxing, but I'd assume there are minor tweaks. The instruction screen graphics do show the Wiimote jackets, as well. I e-mailed Nintendo about the issue and they had me call customer service where the rep basically said, "I haven't heard that there's any differences, but if there are, the ones you're describing are minor enough that they don't really alter game play." He's right, I guess, but still -- I'd really hoped that Nintendo would be willing to let me exchange my "old" version for a "new" version, particularly since I bought my Wii in 2007! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.189.107.144 (talk) 18:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
