Assessment Report

1. Article needs to be expanded using Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements as a guide.
2. More photos need to be added.
3. References and Citations are crucial for wikipedia, and so these must be added as the article is expanded. Make sure that as many as possible are "in-line" citations.(See WP:References, WP:V, and WP:CITE for guidance.)

Added the picture of widnes central but couldn't get the thumb nail view to work for some reason. If anyone can address this it would be appreciated.

Homeward Bound

If Simon wrote this (or got the idea for it) in 1965, it couldn't have been at Widnes Central since this was closed in 1964. It may have been Ditton, closed 1992 (from which factories can be seen, unlike from the present Widnes station which is in leafy suburbia). This would also make sense if he was heading to London. Thought the fairest thing is to note there is a dispute over the station in question. Doesn't anyone here know Paul Simon - if so - ask him!

Too many subsections

I don't think the 'transport' and 'religion' sections need to be subdivided. The 'bus' and 'methodist' sections are far too short. Also, can't 'Sports and leisure venues' and 'Sport' be combined? Epbr123 23:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

I've had another go at cutting down headings -- 40+ sections is a bit much for any article, but especially so for the amount of material here. Sections are great for ordering material, cutting text up into digestable chunks, and providing a table of contents, but you can go too far the other way, and have the text too fragmented to be readable, and the ToC too full to be useful.

I was wondering: why are libraries and health considered to be communual facilities, but schools aren't? Joe D (t) 22:14, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments on Widnes. I had based the subheadings on those in the Runcorn article which had been rated a GA, although the assessor for that has subsequently commented that there were too many subheadings on that as well. I must say the ToC now looks much better. Regarding 'Education' being separate from 'Communal facilities', I suppose that is based on Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements which does list them as separate subheadings under 'Present day' (and that is a heading I do not find helpful as everything apart from history is likely to be more or less 'present day'). I suppose that settlements with universities (which Widnes does not have) will be providing more than just communal facilities under the heading of Education. Thanks for the reply, I hope you don't mine me copying it here -- I like to talk in the public namespace where possible, to allow others to get involved too. I agree with the point about the "Present day" header and there are ongoing discussions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements about whether to phase them out that you may be interested in. I'm not especially bothered about where education goes, but I have a few ideas about potential changes for the guidelines on that too, so I might bring them up when I get a moment later in the week. Good article

I have passed the article. I have copyedited several areas. It is nicely written, with extensive references. Although I have never been to Widnes, I now have a fair idea of the history and politics of the town, and what I could expect to find there. Congratulations to all editors, especially Peter I. Vardy. 'Club 4' in Widnes.

I think there should be a section on 'Club 4' in Widnes. It was a famous club throughout the North West during the early 1990s. Anyone into the acid house and rave scene at that time in the North West would have heard of 'Club 4'. I know that other material you will find on wikiedpia is not adequately sourced, but does not absolve us of trying to be better editors of a good encyclopaedia here where we can. Notable People III

Re Kim Cattrall. This appears to be one that hasn't gone away. I have removed reference to her being from Widnes, incl source, (less than reliable). Kim Cattrall is from Liverpool this is seen in references on her wiki page but one in particular is with Mel C (and Mel B) on the Paul O'Grady Show [1] and not only does she confirm she is from Liverpool but speaks with a Liverpool accent. A clear mandate for her birthplace. If she was from Widnes she would say so, (Mel C on this interview actually says she is from just outside Liverpool-refering to Whiston/Whiston Hospital).Babydoll9799 (talk) 19:47, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thought you might be interested to know that Kim Cattrall' IMDB page references Widnes as her place of birth (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000326/). Millions

The British film Millions (one of my all-time favourites) appears to have been shot mainly in Widnes. At least, the boys attend Ditton Primary School (called "All Saints" in the film), and the outline of Fiddlers Ferry power station is seen several times from an angle that can only be gained from a viewpoint within Widnes.
