I cannot find any differences between "echo $USER" and "whoami". When I use "su root" on Slackware 13.37 they both return "root". Does anyone have a source for this information? Please have a look at this screenshot: http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/mbwgc8rq/Bildschirmfoto06.05.2012132121.png --87.164.197.227 (talk) 11:24, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
Is there a parallel between this and any Wikipedia/MediaWiki tools?
[edit]I was trying to figure out exact details about my user account, such as the username used internally and any permission groups I'm in. In the former case, it's presumably either macks2008 or Macks2008, but knowing for sure would be nice. In the latter case, I know I'm auto-confirmed, but I was curious if there were any other groups I've been automatically (or manually) added to. Does anyone know how I can find this information? It would also be good to know the built-in way of checking, in case I ever start a MediaWiki site of my own. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Macks2008 (talk • contribs) 15:04, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
edit: whoops, forgot signature (but I'll leave the auto-signature because there's no point in changing it now. Sinebot beat me to the punch!) and wanted to say that I would prefer any people to this use {{ping|Macks2008}} at the start of their reply to trigger a notification for me--Macks2008 (talk) 15:15, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
