Clarification needed
[edit]The acronym "OST" is used throughout the article, but its meaning is never stated explicitly. Is it "Oglala Sioux Tribe"? If so, the first use of the acronym should be something like "...the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST)..." Ammodramus (talk) 17:48, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- Done - good reminder.Parkwells (talk) 18:01, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Copyvio problems?
[edit]There's a blockquote in the article that consists of five consecutive (albeit short) paragraphs from an AP article that appeared in the Rapid City Journal. It begins "Tribal officials did not return phone calls..." (Unfortunately, the blockquote tags apparently suppress paragraph breaking within the quote, so it looks like a single long paragraph in the article.) This strikes me as verging on WP:COPYVIO, as a fairly long passage from a copyrighted source. Could I suggest that it be paraphrased rather than quoted? Ammodramus (talk) 05:54, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- Good suggestion - I was working too fast and trying to save time without losing the information.Parkwells (talk) 12:57, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
Alternatives
[edit]The source for this, James Hughes of a Federal Indian Law seminar, has a history of recent (21st century) legislation sponsored in Nebraska related to Whiteclay, which I intend to add in summary form. Parkwells (talk) 06:30, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Page move
[edit]I'd like to suggest that this article be moved to "Whiteclay, Nebraska", with "Pine Ridge, Nebraska" relegated to a dab page for this article and for Pine Ridge (region). In light of the fact that several editors have recently done a lot of work on the article, I'm going to moot this suggestion here rather than being bold and implementing it forthwith.
Per WP:PLACE, we should be using a "widely accepted English name" if one exists. The name "Whiteclay" seems to be the one overwhelmingly used in the media. Nebraska's two largest newspapers, the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal Star, both use it. It's been used in the New York Times and a Washington Post blog. Closer to the actual site, it's used by the nearest daily newspaper, the Rapid City Journal; and by the Chadron Record. "Whiteclay" is the way the settlement appears in the Rand McNally US road atlas, and in the Delorme Nebraska atlas. It is, of course, the name used in the title of Vasina's movie; and it's used by the US Board on Geographic Names. The U.S. Postal Service's ZIP code search recognizes the name "Whiteclay" (although it warns that it's not an official address); it doesn't recognize "Pine Ridge" at all.
The only support for "Pine Ridge" seems to come from the U.S. Census Bureau. I'd suggest, therefore, that we move the to "Whiteclay"; and that we remove the awkward "census-designated place" business from the lead and replace it with "unincorporated community", shifting the census-designated business down into the "Demographics" section. Absent convincing arguments to the contrary, I'll do so a week or so after posting this. Ammodramus (talk) 19:35, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
- SOunds good; thanks for proposing and doing it.Parkwells (talk) 22:06, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
- "A week or so" wound up being about five months; but I finally remembered to do it. Ammodramus (talk) 22:39, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
- Have also converted Pine Ridge, Nebraska to a dab page, per above. Ammodramus (talk) 02:40, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Dismissal by federal court of lawsuit
[edit]Just wanted to let interested editors know that the US District Court Judge dismissed the OST suit against beer stores in Whiteclay and associated companies on 1 Oct. 2012, "without prejudice", saying the federal court did not have jurisdiction over the issue. It was suggested the tribe could sue in state court. Have added content and cite to the article.Parkwells (talk) 15:26, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
