Plot Synopsis

Another editor has pointed out [1] that the text currently under "Synopsis" isn't actually a plot summary but evaluative comments on the novel. I'm replacing this with a synopsis that's roughly 700 words; comments about the character of Lady Braceley and the novel's recreation of Rome are in the "Reception" section.
