Purpose of entry

[edit]

This entry is not meant to be the final word on the subject. My intention is just to get the ball rolling. Histragic (talk) 00:00, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Use of self-published sources

[edit]

Two of the sources cited in this article, books by Jane Clayton and Charles Clayton, were published by Ms. Clayton. That makes them self-published sources unless the authors qualify as "established expert[s] on the subject matter, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable third-party publications", and I am not able to find evidence of that. Therefore, I don't believe their books are reliable sources. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 03:39, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The two books are based on Jane Clayton’s 2002 PhD thesis, “The development of a Southern Whale Fishery from Britain between 1775 and 1815” accepted at the University of Wales, Swansea. I have drawn on these volumes for other purposes and found them reliable. Other contributors to Wikipedia have also used them as a source.(Histragic (talk) 11:34, 21 June 2018 (UTC)) Histragic (talk) 11:34, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
