Lead

[edit]

From MOS:LEAD "When the page title is used as the subject of the first sentence, it may appear in a slightly different form, and it may include variations, including synonyms." Primergrey (talk) 00:09, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • So basically, either include all names in the lead and bold them, or leave some names out of the lead and include them unbolded in the body. Since MOS guidelines favour the former, that's what I would prefer, too. The reverting editor's suggestion that I take a style issue to the WP:BIRDS page is unhelpful and out of line with practice. Using the project page was suggested to discuss this proposed change as it would affect not just this one, but hundreds (if not thousands) of articles across the project. Nothing in WP:BIRD with regards to bolding alternate names is in conflict with MOS. Species with multiple alternate names, especially lesser used ones, would clutter the lead and be better placed in the taxonomy paragraph. As per MOS:BOLD, these alternate names (that redirect to the article) should all be bolded (not italicized) within the running text at their first occurrence. MOS does not dictate to place all of these names in the lead, nor does it recommend un-bolding them at first mention in the running text. Recommend retaining the status quo.
