Map

[edit]

Can someone post a map highlighting Western Avenue? I'd like to, but don't have the tools to create one that isn't copyvio.

Indian trail

[edit]

I'm removing the highly dubious claim about Western having once been an indian trail. It does not follow the lay of the land at all, instead going perfectly north-south at a distance of exactly three miles from the zero point laid out by the city planners. It would be an incredible coincidence if there happened to have already been an indian trail on that line, but the burden of proof has to be on the people making that claim (I'm not turning up anything on Google, other than links to this article). /blahedo (t) 23:36, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Length calculations

[edit]

Calculating the length of Western Avenue is decidedly non-trivial. I'll post interpretations of GIS data here.

  • In Evanston - mile 0.00 to 2.35 (as Asbury Avenue)
  • In Chicago - mile 2.35 to 4.35 (Rogers Park / Lake View), then 0.00 to 21.67 (Howard to 119th Street). Some of these lengths are in Evergreen Park, but that's really the border.
  • In Blue Island / Dixmoor / Flossmoor - mile 21.67 to 25.38.

Anyways, this gives the following: a continuous length of 27.38 miles (44.06 km), of which 23.67 miles (38.09 km) are in the Chicago city limits. —Rob (talk) 20:44, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not the Longest Street. Not by a long shot.

[edit]

At 27.38 miles, Western Ave is not even close to the longest street in the US, much less, the world. There are, at least, over a dozen streets in Phoenix that are longer, including Baseline Rd, at almost 43 miles. Also, the statement, "Some sources...", is currently unsourced, only backed up by a single dead reference - a link that leads to a blank page (as of Dec 3, 2010). Since the "longest street" claim is verifiably not true, using any online or printed map of the Phoenix area, it should be removed from the article.

Below is a list of longer streets just in the Phoenix area:

27.4 Thomas
30.0 University
30.6 Buckeye
30.7 Bell Rd
31.1 Van Buren
33.3 Camelback
35.8 Sun Valley Pkwy
37.9 Broadway
38.2 McDowell
40.7 Indian School
40.7 Southern
42.9 Baseline

Cicero Avenue is longer than Western, too, at 44.59 miles, and that's still in Chicago! What's with the bogus claim on this page and how has it stood for so long? 107.137.202.0 (talk) 01:25, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Most dangerous for cyclists?

[edit]

Are there any statistics on this, other than just the fact that it is busy and has no bike lanes? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.80.47.110 (talk) 23:35, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References?

[edit]

As of 2011-03-26, the only reference for the article is:
^ a b Illinois Technology Transfer Center (2006). "T2 GIS Data". http://www.dot.state.il.us/gist2/select.html. Retrieved 2007-11-08.
As far as I could tell, it provides no immediate or readily available information regarding anything in the article. If the site does have info on Western Avenue, a direct link to such info needs to be provided. Otherwise, as is, the reference should be removed.
