Largest free-spanning dome in the United States 1956 to ?
[edit]Regarding the comment "Prior to the completion of the Houston Astrodome in 1965, the building had the largest free-spanning dome in the United States" -- how does that hold true given that Alexander Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Georgia Tech opened in 1956 with a dome with a diameter of 270 feet?

- It's because it's a supported dome. See the second to last paragraph of [1]. Supported domes need not apply, sorry. Joe I 14:44, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
August 22, 2009: Thanks for the reply and reference to the Georgia Tech website. I think the wording in the website is confusing the issue. The dome is not supported -- it is free span. Yes, the 32 steel ribs do support the structure (all domes are supported in some way), but they support from the perimeter -- there are no support columns in the span. Typically the diameter referenced would be based on the free span I believe. Georgia Tech website: "The structure is circular in design with a diameter of 270 feet. Thirty-two steel ribs support the curved dome structure which weighs approximately 862 tons and covers an area of 71,500 square feet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rocketdawg12 (talk • contribs) 23:46, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- I've been to the West Baden hotel a few times, before and since it has been opened, and they continue to claim that the atrium was covered by the largest free-standing steel dome for over 60 years, until the Astrodome was built in 1965. (See University of Houston article here.) The Wiki article currently claims that the dome was surpassed by the Bojangles' Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1955. This has no documentation either in this article, nor on the Bojangles' Coliseum article. If there is no reference for the claim, I recommend reverting the text to the more common assertion that West Baden boasted the largest dome until 1965. Canute (talk) 22:04, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
