A recent study in Egypt recorded 27 specimens collected from commercial fishermen, so they definitely live in the SE Mediterranean area, as they were caught near Alexandria. They may not really live permanently in the north, but they do definitely live in the south of the Mediterranean sea.
In another study, they were shown to be a relatively common catch by local fishermen, as small specimens were caught near the coast, right from the beach.
