Gou ?

[edit]

Where is S Gou, Mali? Gao, Gao Region ? --Ettrig (talk) 14:49, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing that out! I'm just now starting this article and I hadn't really proofed over the validity of the information that was already there. I just put cities in alphabetical order and removed links that weren't needed. I checked the reference and it said Segou, Mali, so it was just a typo of the previous person who wrote it. --Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 18:02, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What is Inland delta Mali? --Ettrig (talk) 11:40, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I checked the range map from my source and it was referring to the inland Niger River Delta, which is a big area of floodplains and lakes in central Mali. I should have clarified that, sorry! --Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 02:09, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, don't feel regret. Just keep up the good work. Try to find wikilinks for all the "places" that we cannot expect a large majority of readers to be familiar with. --Ettrig (talk) 08:22, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you! I found all of them that I could last night. Some of the "rivers" were sometimes classified as streams, so they didn't have wikipages but other than that, I think I linked a good amount of material. --Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 19:39, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proofing

[edit]

"Urban and agricultural development and increased damming and use of hydroelectric power in rivers in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are more threats to the African manatee's habitat and life, and thick congestion of boats in waterways may cause African manatees to have a deadly run-in with the vessels." -- Towards the beginning of this sentence, it looks and sounds like there are too many "ands". I'd try to fix it, but I wasn't sure if you meant increased damming and increased use of hydroelectric power, or if you just meant the use of it in general, not an INCREASED use. Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 20:22, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, you're right! Thanks. --Theawesomestpersonyouwillevermeet (talk) 00:00, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! :) Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 07:54, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IUCN

[edit]

Hey, I went and changed the reference fot IUCN to the specific IUCN template that the pro wikipedians used on my article, instead of just doing the cite web one. I hope that's okay! Imthebombliketicktick (talk) 15:09, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:African manatee at Toba aquarium.jpg shows a dugong, not a manatee

[edit]

The purported image of an African manatee at the top of the page is actually not even a manatee. It's a dugong, a totally different species. I'll try to find a freely licensed picture of an African manatee to replace it with. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mphornet (talkcontribs) 21:55, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alt names

[edit]

We need a section or some PERSONDATA-like alt text to include the names of this thing in various local languages. I was editing Wikisource This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainChisholm, Hugh, ed. (1911). Encyclopædia Britannica (11th ed.). Cambridge University Press. {{cite encyclopedia}}: Missing or empty |title= (help) and trying to find wtf an ayu was and couldn't because the name wasn't already added. (I know the real solution here is to go ahead and do some redirects and dab headers and I'll do that, but the info should also be available on the page somewhere.) — LlywelynII 09:05, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Illustration of the box

[edit]

I think that the illustration of the Taxobox is not correct but correspond to Trichechus manatus, is'n't it ? --Deliryc64 (talk) 00:38, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For me the book is from Central America and the name australis (syn. of senegalensis) is a sort of confusion. --Deliryc64 (talk) 01:00, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Threats clarification

[edit]

In the Threats section it's noted that some behaviors provoke human hunting of manatees, but getting caught in a net (and subsequently damaging it) can't really be called a behavior - its an outcome from co-habiting the same environments as people. As written the sentence gives the impression that manatees cause (or are at fault) their being hunted. A better sentence/phrase might be 'African manatees are occasionally hunted by people fishing in the same habitat. Manatees entangled in fishing nets can result in damage to the nets and loss of income.' Timvandervoet (talk) 16:51, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
