How can it be a notification of a death sentence if it's dated 12 Sept 1980, and the guy died 26 June 1981?

Not, it's just used as abbreviation.

Moved around a bit and improved (I hope) what I say about the trial in the lead.
"after German Reunification when" no reason to capitalise reunification.
