Sourcing and expanding the article
[edit]Just a few thoughts on the article. It needs more sources of course, but also has the potential to be expanded well past its current length, if the sources needed can be found. The programme was one of the biggest radio programmes of its time (in Wales and the UK at large), so it really should have an article. Just commenting on the article as it stands currently (14 June, 2011) though, there are a few problems that should be addressed.
For example, the programme almost certainly did start in 1938, but that would still need to be sourced. If it did start in 1938, then the sentence starting "First transmitted in 1938 by the Welsh Home Service" would need to be amended, with appropriate sourcing, as the Home Service as a station wasn't created until 1939; it is more likely that the programme was originally broadcast on the Welsh service of the BBC Regional Programme, but that again would need to be sourced. There is also the question of which service the programme was actually broadcast on during the war years, the Home Service or the BBC Forces Programme or both. (If the listenership targeted included the members of the armed forces overseas, then the Home Service alone wouldn't have reached them.) There are a couple of other issues along those lines that might need to be addressed.
But there are also issues of details omitted that should make their way into the article. For example, the use of the song "We'll Keep a Welcome (in the Hillsides)" in episodes is important in itself, seeing as how it went on to become a standard; the song was written by the producer Mai Jones and one of the performers, Lyn Joshua, and was quite probably written for the programme (but sources would be needed before the article can say that); expansion of that angle would be a must. Harry Secombe's career was kickstarted by the programme, according to quite a few newspaper articles, although he had been in radio programmes previously.
Judging from the rather unusual edit history of the article, there is a possibility of there being a class project being involved here and while this shouldn't necessarily be a problem, it would be wise to suggest to any co-ordinator (teacher, lecturer or whatever) that they check out the Wikipedia:School and university projects article and Wikipedia:FAQ/Schools FAQ.
I would also suggest that dropping a line to the talk pages of the BBC Wikiproject and the Wales Wikiproject to see if they could help. Maybe they won;t be able to help, but it wouldn't do any harm to ask. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 23:05, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- I can find no evidence of any series of this name in the schedules of the pre-war BBC Regional Programme. Welsh Rarebit appears to have begun life in the BBC Forces Programme in February 1940, and this (together with the BBC Home Service) was its home until the end of 1944. It was revived after the war, to run in the BBC Light Programme from 1948 to 1951 (plus one Christmas Special in 1952). Will amend the article accordingly unless editors have any contradictory evidence. -- Picapica (talk) 22:01, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
