Talk:Waychinicup National Park
Bald Island
[edit]According to a recent edit by Daniel0816, "Bald Island locates within the park." Ignoring the transitivity of the verb and/or the anthropomorphism of the island, unless it actually matters for the purpose of this discussion ... I removed that sentence on the grounds that the park is "bordered by the Southern Ocean to the south" and the island is 1.5km offshore, so logically the island cannot be within the park. JarrahTree has suggested to me that the island could be within the park, citing the map in this brochure. In the interests of clarifying the matter, I'm raising the matter here.
It appears to me that the aforementioned map clearly shows:
- The Waychinicup National Park (green) going to the mainland beach and no further
- The Bald Island Nature Reserve (orange), apparently offshore
- Between them a section which is neither green (national park) nor orange (nature reserve), but blue. The legend does not mention blue, but in this context one might reasonably think it is the ocean - and (not being green) not part of the national park.
The brochure does not state explicitly whether a "nature reserve" is part of a "national park", but it does include three instances of the text "national parks [and/or] nature reserves", which suggest that one does not automatically include the other.
Does anyone have reference that states explicitly that Bald Island lies within Waychinicup National Park? Mitch Ames (talk) 06:14, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
The Department of Parks and Wildlife website does include Bald Island (and Mount Manypeaks Nature Reserve) in the national park. Perhaps the "borders" description needs re-writing. (See also #Mount Manypeaks below.) Mitch Ames (talk) 06:35, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- As if anyone is going to give the magic clue. Inclusion of being vested in the same vesting as a land based park has nothing to do with the capacity of DPAW map makers and managers. Logic can only exist in Government Gazettal of the park and its contents. To explore variant ideas around a cartography designed for peopple exploring the park may mislead all considering this. GG only exist in online form since 1988. and better search facility since 2002. Highly likely gazettal was long earlier than this.
- Also try looking at the Bald Island article and check the classification of it against the park classification for starters - Bald Island was created as an A class reserve in 1964 (see the missing reference 1 in the article), and when Waychinicup was declared a national park is not easy from the clean dpaw web space. I strongly suggest appropriate material to help you in your quest for either 'truth' or 'logic' shall not be found from available online material. JarrahTree 06:53, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Mount Manypeaks
[edit]The article says that "The park is bordered by ... Mount Manypeaks Nature Reserve to the east", but this is not consistent with the map in this brochure or the Department of Parks and Wildlife website. Mitch Ames (talk) 06:32, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
