Talk:Watson's Hotel/GA1
GA Review
[edit]Article (edit | visual edit | history) · Article talk (edit | history) · Watch
First, well done for creating an article with the limited information you had. It's been a while since I've done a GA review, but I'd say that for the length of the article, the amount of sources is sufficient. Now, I'm putting this on hold until you can resolve/answer a few issues I've noticed:
Infobox
[edit]The map image is currently under consideration for deletion. Since you provide the GPS coordinates, anyone can find it on their map program of choice without hassle, so I would say remove the map for now. If the image is not deleted and the copyright issue is resolved, feel free to add it back in the future.
Lead
[edit]India's oldest surviving cast iron building
- Do you have a source saying this? If so, this is probably notable enough to get its own citation.
constructed onsite between 1867 and 1869
- The cited Times of India article says the building was constructed between 1867 and 1871. Which is correct?
History
[edit]"If only Watson had imported the English weather as well."[2][1][2]
- Is there a reason that source 2 is cited twice here?
After Watson's death
- When did Watson die? Mention this.
hotel was closed and sold to a private owner. Sometime after this, it was subdivided and partitioned into small cubicles with independent access and let out on rent.
- I did a bit of revising to this sentence, but I wasn't sure if, right after the hotel was sold, the new private owner subdivided it and such. If so, then this sentence could be streamlined as follows:
- In the 1960s the hotel was closed and sold to a private owner, who subdivided and partitioned the building into small cubicles with independent access that were let out on rent.
who sold the property to a private owner?? when it was already on leased to sued abdul haq —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.200.96.138 (talk) 19:05, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit]According to a legend, Indian industrialist Jamsetji Tata was denied access to the hotel. In retaliation he opened the Taj Mahal Palace, a hotel that stands near what is now the Gateway of India, in 1903.
- Earlier, you refer to it as the Taj Mahal Hotel. Make up your mind as to which name you want to refer to it as; keep it consistent. Also, the fact that the Taj Mahal Hotel is mentioned earlier in a rather significant role (stealing away Watson's customers, in a sense) with no background about it whatsoever, and you don't provide any background about it until this paragraph. Try and resolve this, if you can.
efforts by Heritage activists to persuade its present owner to invest in restoration have been unsuccessful due to his refusal to spend from his own pocket, and without tenants' contributing.
- This is potentially libellous, so you should provide a source here. Also I'm a little confused as to whether you're talking about tenants not contributing, or the building owner refusing to consider tenants' contributions.
The building is currently listed as a Grade II-A heritage structure. Where? Your wikilink goes to the UK designation, but it seems highly unlikely that a structure in India would be designated this by the UK.
Also, as a general note, your prose is occasionally too choppy and broken up into short sentences. You might want to see if you can merge some of the sentences in the article to flow better. I've done a few for you, see if you can polish up any others. If you can fix the issues I listed above, I think you'll have a worthy GA here. Cheers, Green451 (talk) 03:07, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
- Short comments from Apterygial (talk · contribs)
- Per WP:LEAD, you shouldn't mention anything in the lead that you don't mention in the body; the cite in the lead should be moved to Current state, per WP:LEADCITE, and the info repeated there.
- A little redundancy; words such as "currently" are usually not needed (though I would keep the one in the lead).
- Another interesting thing about the "According to a legend..." bit is that at first it is presented as legend, and then fact.
- There are a small number of places which need non-breaking spaces, see WP:NBSP.
Apart from that, I can't build on what Green451 said. Apterygial 03:46, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the review: Some comments:
- I won't remove the map as yet, till it is deleted. I think the grounds for deletion are thin and I have commented on the IFD.
- Added source for "oldest surviving"
- Remove extra sourcing.
- I've expanded on the legend bit, and also added a latest citation that debunks the theory.
- Grade IIA -- will need to create a new article.
- Removed the potentially libellous material.
- No sources available when he died
- Will fix the choppiness and lead
- Have to research more on when the hotel was built.
- Not sure what needs a non-breaking space.
I will be away till New Year. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:17, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I think most of the issues are solved except the foundation year. Not sure which year is credible. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:06, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- It looks fine to me. Choose which ever date you think works best. I will try and update all the necessary templates, but forgive me if I miss a few. Congratulations! It was a pleasure to review this article. Green451 (talk) 03:17, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
- ADDENDUM: One more thing I forgot. If you ever manage to find the year of Watson's death, you should put that in. It would certainly help the reader establish timelines in their head. Thanks, Green451 (talk) 03:25, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, and sure, I'll put up any additional information when it comes up in any media reports. Watson seems to be a NN person. =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:41, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
