Using interviews as sources
[edit]I understand that there is a current school project at this school to expand this article, which I think is a helpful introduction into how Wikipedia works. However, students and facilitators should be familiar with the WP:Five Pillars and the various policies and guidelines. This includes WP:No original research.
Interviewing a person, and adding content with the cited source being your interview crosses the line between being an editor and being a reseearcher, and is contrary to the "No Original Research" policy. The interview is a primary source. Reporting or analyzing that interview is a secondary source (like your school newspaper). Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and is therefore a tertiary source which summarizes what is contained in secondary sources. As indicated in other discussions with the editors to this article, the interviews really need to be published elsewhere and then referred to. Otherwise, the editor has become the researcher, and it is no longer an encyclopedia article. For more information, see WP:PSTS.
I also strongly encourage the facilitator of this project to check out Wikipedia:School and university projects orWP:EDUCATOR which can assist in setting up a Wikipedia editing course (such as a course or school project to expand this article). Singularity42 (talk) 18:25, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]I am strongly encouraged. I only wish I knew about 3 months ago. I am already in contact with the teachers I am collaborating with. The guidelines make perfect sense. Despite feeling a bit overwhelmed, I am impressed by the number of people who have contacted me over the past 2 days regarding Wiki policy.
School article guidelines
[edit]It would also be wise if the instructor for this project would familiarize themself with the school article guidelines, which are found at WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG. Gtwfan52 (talk) 22:13, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you all for your contributions to Waterford High School (Connecticut). A regular editor has removed some inappropriate content from this article according to the WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG article guidelines for schools, and editing has been suspended for a short while contributors familiarise themselves with the article guidelines, and policies about mentioning people. Please refer to the article history to see and understand the changes. Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:32, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
