Contributions welcome
[edit]I started this page to compelement others such as Energy security.
Contributions and suggestions for any restructuring are welcome.
About half the world's population are affected by uncertainty of water supplies. I understand that part of the tension between Israel and Syria(?) revolves around water security.dinghy (talk) 13:40, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Overlaps with other articles
[edit]The content of this article overlaps with various other pages, such as International waters and Integrated Water Resources Management. I would suggest that anyone contributing to this article consults these other articles. Ideally a consensus would emerge so that one topic is dealt with in a single article, even if different terms are used to describe the same topic. Also, for specific countries, I would suggest to contribute to existing articles in the Category:Water resources management by country and Category:Water supply and sanitation by country before starting articles about "Water security in xxx". Finally, on substance, I believe that the term water security is not only used to refer to the security of drinking water supply, but also in relation to water use for irrigation (e.g. in Egypt and Syria).--Mschiffler (talk) 21:32, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- Those are quite clearly three different topics which should have three separate articles. All three articles are hopelessly inadequate, especially this one, which is the most important. Luwilt (talk) 00:42, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Important to distinguish "Water Security and emergency preparedness" as a subject of its own
[edit]It is also called "Water Security", but does not refer just to conservation and ensuring that there is _enough_ water for populations. Water Security as it relates to emergency preparedness refers to ensuring that existing water supplies are manageable and safe in the face of problems, such as natural disaster, contamination, intentional attacks on water supplies, etc. As Mschiffler mentions, the topic does overlap with (though is still separate from) articles like Integrated Water Resources Management. I would suggest that ideally this would be its own article under the name "Water Security". LindseyEKerr (talk) 09:03, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
I suggest this page be retitled "Water Scarcity and Security" to distinguish it from security in the sense of infrastructure protection and emergency response. Jos.Lincoln (talk) 17:54, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
It isn't only about potable water, surely
[edit]Water for irrigation of crops is also of immense importance, so shouldn't it be covered by this article? Luwilt (talk) 00:40, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- I agree that it should be discussed in this article due to the fact that non-potable is of great importance. Currently I feel like it is simply implied in much of this page but direct discussion would be nice. A10630534 (talk) 20:42, 4 November 2016 (UTC)Bergmanucsd (talk) 00:22, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Discover (magazine) resource
[edit]In current (December 2011) USA issue cover story is "Water Wars: The coming battle over Earth's most precious resource ... The Future of Water", starting page 48 with Heidi Cullen for Climate Central, Bill Richardson on World Resources Institute, Grady Gammage Jr. attorney with Arizona State University Global Institute of Sustainability, and Pat Mulroy of the Southern Nevada Water Authority.

Merge proposed
[edit]Water stress is simply water insecurity by a different name, which is what this article is essentially about. It should be merged here. -- Beland (talk) 22:33, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- From the definition, "Water crisis" looks to be an extreme, un-happened or the same as "water stress". Water crisis and water security look like antonyms. The more I read these three articles, the more I got confused of the differences between them. I think the titles and the article differ.
- I can merge water stress and water crisis into a new title > water scarcity, and let it be the opposite of water security. That will clear up confusion. Some information (and the history merge) can be moved to water security. Objections? -- Sidelight12 Talk 17:07, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- I agree that it is confusing that those articles are separate. I think having the information about water security decentralized is distracting and needless. If a merger is possible it would be an improvement to wikipedia. A10630534 (talk) 20:26, 4 November 2016 (UTC)Bergmanucsd (talk) 00:22, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Proposed merge with Water security and emergency preparedness
[edit]I think the overlap between these two articles is great; the delineation is not clear; the reason why we need a separate article on water security in the context of emergency preparedness is not clear; the water security and emergency preparedness article introduces itself with a general definition of water security; etc. In short, this article would serve readers much better if it was incorporated into the water security article. — This, that and the other (talk) 05:58, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- Strong support - Water security and emergency preparedness is a sub-set of Water security and is also simply a USA view except for a single sentence. Velella Velella Talk 08:36, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- Support The other article is not that large. prokaryotes (talk) 20:35, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Need more references for new paragraph on intra-national competition in India
[edit]Someone added new content about intra-national competition in India. It starts with this sentence: "In India, there is competition for water resources of all inter state rivers..." - however, for the whole section only one citation is given, which is not really sufficient? Bad Sources
[edit]This page has big problems with its sources. Reference 1, 5, 16, and 42 are all dead links or irrelevant to the article just to name a few. I will attempt to remedy some of these problems but help would be nice. A10630534 (talk) 20:38, 4 November 2016 (UTC)Bergmanucsd (talk) 00:22, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
[edit]Most of the info is pretty up to date, although some might be a year or two behind. I think something that could be added is some of the links in the article will not open up so probably shoudl update that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Obynum (talk • contribs) 03:39, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Tiny footprint???
[edit]This wiki entry is poorly written and scientifically wrong. It also makes unsubstantiated claims about technologies that don’t exist. MartinKeulertz (talk) 18:04, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- I think this has also been dealt with (it's connected to the section just below this one). EMsmile (talk) 17:02, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
