For the sake of transparency and attribution I would like to mention that in creating this article I used the following material from existing articles in Wikipedia:
- The table on water resources and the graph on water use are taken from Water supply and sanitation in Egypt
- Parts of the section on biodiversity and the section on health impact were taken from Hydropolitics in the Nile Basin
Other users are, as always, encourage to cross-check facts and to further improve the article which, of course, is not perfect.--Mschiffler (talk) 12:14, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Admiration
[edit]I admire this article greatly. A lot of work must have gone into it. Would like to draw attention to this figure representing water balances in Egypt, and also to the salt balance described in Aswan Dam#Irrigation for agriculture showing that Egypt is a net salt exporter into the Mediterranean. The table Water resources and Extraction in Egypt suggests all quantities additive, but some are not, like reuse and renewable groundwater extraction, which do not augment the resources as they originate from the resources themselves. I will consider to attempt an integration of both topics. Further I suggest to create the page Irrigation in Egypt in accordance with the series of articles in Wikipedia Irrigation by country and to give it provisionally a redirect to this page. Perhaps, in future, the article on Irrigation in Egypt may grow into a full fledged page. With due respect, R.J.Oosterbaan (talk) 19:03, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your feedback and encouragement. Indeed it took some effort to write this article, but it was eased somewhat by the routine I gained writing articles on the same and related topics covering other countries. You are absolutely right that not all elements of the water balance are additive. Please feel free to improve the text and/or table on the basis of the flow chart, which is a better tool to represent water balances than a simple table. Please feel also free to improve the article related to the salt balance. I also encourage you to create the page Irrigation in Egypt. Let me know if you need some help on that from me or others more familiar with the topic than me.--Mschiffler (talk) 14:01, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- The table was adjusted accordingly, a few references were added, the redirect page Irrigation in Egypt was made and a template on Irrigation by country was inserted under See also. I am still pondering on the incorporation of a little bit more information on drainage and salinity control/salt balances, as I am not yet sure how to do that without interfering too much with the character of the article. R.J.Oosterbaan (talk) 18:27, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you. The table makes much more sense now that you adjusted it. I would suggest that you elaborate on the salt balance in a new sub-section of "environmental aspects". Don't let considerations about structure hold you back too much. Good-faith edits by competent authors are always welcome. The character of the article should not suffer, and even if it happened, it is nothing that cannot be fixed later. Happy editing and thank you for your contributions!--Mschiffler (talk) 18:38, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- I have made a small expansion under "surface water quality" in the existing section "environmental aspects" to accommodate the main feature of the salt balance. R.J.Oosterbaan (talk) 20:22, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- After that two pictures were added, internal links were applied and more text expansions were made, including a few sentences about drainage investments, and additional references were given. This ends my contributions for now. R.J.Oosterbaan (talk) 17:00, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for filling this gap on drainage and adding the pictures. I made a few small edits to the references. The article definitely is better now.--Mschiffler (talk) 18:27, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
