Not just World War I
[edit]There is at least one example of the term being used in World War II. See "WAR CABINET, Defence Committee (Operations), ARMY STRENGTHS, Directive by the Minister of Defence," October 9, 1941. (p. 2, paragraph 4.), contemplating "a normal wastage of 50,000 [men] a quarter."
