Elevators?
[edit]Are there any elevators in the Warsaw Centralna station? --88.78.12.57 (talk) 20:36, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Page move - WP:UE
[edit]WP:UE was cited as the reason to move from Warszawa Centralna to Warsaw Centralna but it seems to be a selective use - why translate Warsaw if central is not to be translated also. We should treat Warszawa/Warsaw Centralna/Central as a collocation and see what is English-language usage for the whole term, not the two words in isolation. Here are some numbers from Google:
Term | Search hits | Book hits |
---|---|---|
Warszawa Centralna | 2130 | 114 |
Warszawa Central | 140 | 4 |
Warsaw Centralna | 569 | 14 |
Warsaw Central | 25,100 | 413 |
These are, of course, only indicative, but I do think it shows the article should be at either Warszawa Centralna or Warsaw Central. The current title is the kind of construction we need to avoid.
Regarding the second part of the page move, railway station to Railway Station, stations have either style. The style for stations in Poland is outlined in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (stations in Poland) which prefers lower case. SeveroTC 11:37, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
- The article for the city is at Warsaw, so the station should have a corresponding name. I went with "Warsaw Centralna" because that was used in both the lede and in the box. But from the results above, "Warsaw Central Railway Station" is obviously a better name. Many of the results for "Warszawa Centralna" are from guidebooks, where there is a desire to use terms that correspond to local signage. In the Google News Archive, none of the results for Warszawa Centralna are in English. But there are 131 such results for "Warsaw Central." Kauffner (talk) 15:24, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
- The article for the city is at Warsaw, so the station should have a corresponding name. - not really because what matters in this article is what collocation (Warszawa Centralna, Warsaw Central or any such combination) is used for the railway station. We can't just make one up and it certainly doesn't follow our guidelines such as WP:COMMONNAME! Take a look also at other categories such as Category:Railway stations in Cologne and Category:Railway stations in Munich to see how this is generally tackled. The news results actually show 11 for Warszawa Centralna and the 137 for "Warsaw Central" station is a slight overestimate looking at the links it provides. But either is far preferable to Warsaw Centralna. SeveroTC 16:01, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
- There is obviously no English language common name for this station. If there was such a name, there would be no reason to look at the names of stations in Germany. So it seems that you already aware of this. I have been looking at Wiki station names in various countries, so I have sense of how they are constructed. In any case, if you are OK "Warsaw Central railway station", I'll go ahead with that. Kauffner (talk) 16:56, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
- It's okay by me. SeveroTC 15:52, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
