Getting a suitable map for the Infobox
[edit]@Ikonact:. Hello and Kia ora. I have seen some of the great work you have done with maps for articles about various New Zealand topics. In particular, I have seen the map you provided for Heaphy Track. Today, I have published this article about the Wangapeka Track, another important track in the same park (Kahurangi National Park). The article really needs a map, but I don't know how to create something suitable. Previously, I have used a difficult process of manually tracing over a route in Inkscape against a topo map background, and then exporting as an svg file. I did this for this article Rangitata Diversion Race, but it is a clumsy approach. Are you able to help with something better for the Wangapeka Track article ? --Marshelec (talk) 09:39, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Marshelec I can probably make the same type of map as for Heaphy track but unfortunately not immediately. I can do it i. 2-3 weeks if this is ok for you --Ikonact (talk) 20:24, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. That would be greatly appreciated. I have other content still to add to this article, plus I want to work on expansion of the Heaphy Track article, so 2-3 weeks is fine. There is a possibility that we will present our recent work to the New Zealand Department of Conservation, to seek their engagement and support for work to improve all the articles about our National Parks. That might be in around 3 weeks, so if it was possible to have a map in the Wangapeka Track article by then, that would be great. Thanks again. ---Marshelec (talk) 20:28, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@Marshelec:: I made a first try. Let me know if you have any remarks. Thanks--Ikonact (talk) 20:43, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Ikonact: Thanks for your work on this, and thanks for showing the alternate route in the middle. :) One question is about the placemarkers that appear in the "thumbnail" version. Are they the hut locations ? If so, can you make them appear in the full size map ? I don't see them when I expand the map.--Marshelec (talk) 21:27, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Marshelec I extracted this path from Openstreetmap. The points are shelters or huts (Little Wanganui Emergency Shelter, Wangapeka Bivouac, Stag Flat Shelter, Taipo Hut, Cecil Kings Hut, Kings Creek Hut, Stone Hut). I added these points in the first version but I deleted them later. I guess they still appear in the "thumbnail" version because of some cache issue. If you wish to appear in the full size map I can revert to the previous version. There is an issue however, I still do not know if these point can appear with description. Without description they seem a bit useless for me. Ikonact (talk) 09:39, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Marshelec I have added the names and some icons to the points. Ikonact (talk) 10:04, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Ikonact: Thanks so much - the map is a great improvement for the article.--Marshelec (talk) 20:34, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
