Lede
[edit]I'm looking for some conversation on opening the lede to include the state bands. @Melissa Ferretti - Chairwoman has raised a valid concern in edits about inclusivity. Mashpee and Aquinnah recognize them so I think this needs to be discussed. Indigenous girl (talk) 23:47, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- OK, if there's something you think needs consensus, certainly bring it here. I'll have to look over the article in more depth to see what we've got now on state bands, as right now I don't have a strong opinion beyond the basics of only including real tribes/bands.
- You can of course WP:BRD. Looking over the state of things now, I can see other things that need cleanup. I just don't have the time to do it right now. Also, I'm not attached to who does it. However, Melissa Ferretti - Chairwoman, if you hold a position with the organization you are writing about, this would be a conflict of interest for you. Is this what you are indicating? - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 00:07, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- I'll formulate edits to the lede and post them here to make sure there is consensus. There is a substantial amount of clean up and updating that needs to occur. I can't start on it until Tuesday. I may need a hand if you have the time. Indigenous girl (talk) 01:44, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- Ignore my previous post; I had the diffs open in way that confused who had added what. OK, we have state-recognized groups added, but the IP user blanked one sourced group and switched in another one that is unsourced. - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 02:05, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Conflict with adding
[edit]My apologies as I am a not well versed on how Wikipedia works and who can edit. I was under the impression that it was supposed to be edited by the public. So I may have been confused on that. I am the Chairwoman of the HPWT yes. If this is a conflict of interest then I understand that you may not be able to use my edits now....but I would please ask that you do the proper research and to source the tribes accordingly. As the tribe at Ground Zero of colonization. We are in fact the Plymouth Tribe and we have always been here. The colonists set up shop right now our backyard and we have a strong documented history. So it would be really nice to see a page for us or our history and details noted. How do I get a page for us created and our history documented accurately? Please advise. Much appreciated! Thank you with respect 😀Melissa Ferretti
Melissa Ferretti - Chairwoman (talk) 01:04, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Melissa. I figured you didn't know about the conflict of interest :) I agree that there needs to be a more accurate and updated information. I also agree that your band should have it's own page. I'm going to go over to your talk page to discuss creating a page for Herring Pond. Indigenous girl (talk) 01:41, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
"Native American"
[edit]Dilidor has been warned about edit warring over the term "Native American" before on other articles. Further revert warring over this will go to WP:ANI.--Cúchullain t/c — Preceding undated comment added 19:56, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Update needed
[edit]I came here expecting to find information about land they were granted during the Obama administration and that is now being taken away due to a federal court ruling. Sadly all that information is missing.2603:9000:6E0E:5E00:8F5:635C:6358:D55D (talk) 13:14, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe
[edit]We have been trying for the past year to have our Herring Pond Wampanoag page section edited according and asked how to get our own page created. If we're not even allowed to edit content that belongs to us then what's the sense of Wikipedia if it's information is incorrect or someone is allowed to prevent your edits, we are unable to edit or fix ourselves. Please advise as usual we're being silenced and we'd like to know who we need to speak with to fix this. We would like our very brief, narrow section that is one lame paragraph edited accordingly. We should have the right for our pages to be detailed like every other Tribe in Massachusetts. Please advise! According to Wikipedia this page was edited 4 days ago ? So there's obviously somebody in charge of the editing? Thank you in advance! Any help is much appreciated.
With Respect

Pronunciation
[edit]I'm not sure where I got this information from, whether I've heard it being pronounced this way before or simply assumed it was pronounced this way and I never got corrected, but I was always under the assumption that "Wampanoag" was pronounced something more like /wɑmpəˈnoʊ.æg/ ~ wam-pa-NOH-ag. Apparently the English voice on Google Translate pronounces it this way (I know, the most reliable pronunciation source in the world, but it's something), but after a short stint on YouTube I've heard natives pronounce it like /ˈwɑːmpənɔːɡ/ ~ WAM-pa-nog, the way the article (as of Nov 1st, 2020) says. Should we just keep the /ˈwɑːmpənɔːɡ/ ~ WAM-pa-nog pronunciation, or should we include the /wɑmpəˈnoʊ.æg/ ~ wam-pa-NOH-ag pronunciation? I'm also curious as to if anyone else has heard or assumed the /wɑmpəˈnoʊ.æg/ ~ wam-pa-NOH-ag pronunciation, or if my assumption is just a shot in the dark - it should be known I'm not native to the New England region. 2606:A000:131D:C5B1:4D9B:DEB7:5A3C:6B36 (talk) 12:16, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
Who is editing this page ?
[edit]I'm back trying to figure out who, what where, when and why as we cannot get anyone to help us update our section or even get our own page created, or edit this page. This narrative is very vague and not truthful. I've tried several times to bring attention to the errors on this page. Do I go file the complaint with Wikipedia? Is there a page manager? I've been told it's a conflict of interest for us to edit our own information so who does??? Anyone? Anyone at all? Melissa Ferretti - Chairwoman (talk) 21:04, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
"Historically"
[edit]So I know that Wampanaontꝏwaonk is still in the revitalization process, but using the word "historically" in the language section, in my opinion, is pretty colonial because it sort of negates the nation's present (and future) agency to bring it back, and folks are now starting to speak it to each other again. As such, it's not historical anymore.

Cultural visit
[edit]We are honoured to have a cultural visit from the Wampanoag Nation during the 400th year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower to hear their perspective and to learn about them. Our local press will cover this event. Here is the notice of the event: https://www.worksopguardian.co.uk/news/people/wampanoag-nation-to-visit-bassetlaw-museum-in-exciting-cultural-exchange-3384000 I have added this information to the Bassetlaw Museum page on Wikipedia because we want to record and remember your visit.SandrinaHatman (talk) 18:45, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
Attributing quotes
[edit]In the "Current Status" section are numerous quotes by Frances G. Hutchins attributed to "Day." They were inline citations that I turned into endnotes; however, the author Day is never identified nor their publication. I was able cite one Hutchins quote through another publication. Honestly, the section is unduly long and probably unnecessary in the first place, but I figured I'd ask: Can anyone identify the publication by Day that quotes Hutchins? Horrible Picture, horrible Caption
[edit]I thought for a moment that the dude has a very weird name.
I very much doubt that this picture is representative of a nation. --84.189.90.204 (talk) 14:17, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
- Fixed the caption, the person completely unrelated to the nation is still in the picture. --84.189.90.204 (talk) 14:20, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
- You are absolutely welcome to take better photos of Wampanoag tribal members and place them into public domain so we can have better images. Yuchitown (talk) 15:43, 16 September 2022 (UTC)Yuchitown
? Colonial Tactics - Further Erasure?
[edit]In 2020 I Melissa Ferretti as Chairwoman of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe came here to see how our Tribe was represented here, and sadly found that our section was not only sparsely written, but also an extremely inaccurate narrative of our history as a Wampanoag Tribe in Plymouth and Bournedale.
Because we are mentioned here at all and I am the Chairwoman of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe I was unable to make the appropriate edits to this page due to Wikipedia conflict of interest rules. I was told it would be updated respectfully and since that time our section has only been further misrepresented and edited incorrectly.
So much is wrong with this narrative as written here and it is grossly inaccurate and offensive. I see editors have allowed many recent edits that further erase us from the narrative calling us "unrecognized" and still not giving us the respect we deserve. Our history and the facts do not lie. We have the FACTS and historic records and documentation to prove our continued existence, and we still have care and custody of our 3rd Meetinghouse that was built for the Tribe located at 128 Herring Pond Road. Additionally as surprisingly noted the Town of Plymouth 6 acres deeded back to us something we had to provide proof to receive back in the first place.
I must say having to continually beg for these edits is an embarrassment and also clearly a violation of Wikipedia rules. When the FACTS are not allowed then it defeats the purpose of this site at all, and if anyone can come in and simply edit and erase us, then that too is not something this site was not created for. This site was also not created for individual peoples personal gain, nor to support hate speech using deliberate colonial tactics. None of which should not be allowed here. Although many educators and readers know Wikipedia is not generally used as a legitimate source...for the very reasons I'm here today...people do come here for information. So we want our just respect and if we're mentioned here it should be factual not lies and inaccurate accounts of our long history here in Massachusetts.
Just some if the FACTS that ARE: We have NEVER CEDED our rights to our ancestral homelands nor were we EVER DENIED Federal Recognition. WE are still working on our petition today. Federal recognition costs millions of dollars and simply has been out of reach....but we are gaining traction and hopefully one day justice will prevail. We are in fact State recognized by the Commission on Indian Affairs and we are a Federal Trust Tribe - -OUR original homelands which are located mostly in Plymouth and partly in Bourne. Previously containing three separate parcels of reservation land which was over 3000 acres. The largest being The Great Lot 2600 Acres, the Meetinghouse Lot (where our building still sits today) was 200 Acres and the Herring River Lot know us as the Valley in Bournedale was 400 acres. Of course all post contact as at one time the whole region was Native land.
We've also recently hired and did our genealogy which also doesn't lie and traces our currently enrolled families back to pre contact and post contact written in John Cotton congregation with names Quatchatasset (Sepit), Conet, Chummack, Hirsch, Harding, Ellis etc,
I previously came here in respect, as am I now. So, before we go to deliberation and mediation regarding this page... I figured I'd give it one more gallant effort and try to resolve these issues and see if someone in charge is willing to right these worngs and fux the grossly inaccurate errors...or if we will be further ignored.

"
[edit]The following is copied from the page: Hutchins appeared to require unchanged culture, including maintenance of a traditional religion and essentially total social autonomy from non-Indian society." Is the quotation mark wrong, or is a leading quotation mark missing? Kdammers (talk) 22:39, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Further misinformation spread by the gatekeepers of this page!
[edit]We've tried over and over again to find a respectful resolution to our demise here only to find another page has been created by the same individual silencing is here. Whomever created it clearly has no real knowledge of the history of the Wampanoag Nation or the Herring Pond Indians and our contribution to the history of Plymouth. We were the only Tribal Community to ever have any land set aside in Plymouth and Bourne MA itself.
It has taken years, but we will continue to moderation as we have tried everything to be respectful and have our data updated accurately. This page is another example of the colonial mindset a and continued es BS lies that are promoted and alherewpedia as aexcept the Tribe themselves nyone can edit these pages any way they see fit to peirh this and ibaccurate nogus narrative. Sad tis t the hostility con, tinue this is even a herelurce.
