I saw award from NSA to Walt Tuchman pertaining to DES. He certainly was a leader in his field and has been credited for triple DES

Factual accuracy disputed

[edit]

I have a copies of:

  • ANSI X3.92-1981 Data Encryption Algorithm (aka "DES")
  • ANS X9.52-1998 Triple Data Encryption Algorith Modes of Operation (aka "Triple DES")

Both of these list the organisations represented (on the committe which submitted the standard to ANSI, or the working group that developed it), both list IBM, but neither lists Walter Tuchman as a representative. Admittedly, it is possible that he "led the development team" but didn't represent it.

FIPS PUB 46-3 Data Encryption Standard (DES), which includes Triple DES, does not mention any organisations or representatives. Nor does the earlier FIPS PUB 46-2.
