Ofonagoro interview in EIR Magazine (1994)
[edit]{{request edit}}
Found an interesting article here from EIR Vol. 21 No. 24 (June 10, 1994) where Dr. Ofonagoro talks about the Constitutional Conference Commission. Would appreciate please if anyone could have a look at it and include the information in the article with the relevant citations. Thanks Patrick Ofonagoro (talk) 10:50, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- Patrick Ofonagoro, if you come back to Wikipedia, would you please write up a piece of text that could be added to the article? You can just write the text here, and I can simply move it into the article if it looks appropriate. As it is, I've never heard of Dr. Ofonagoro, so I don't think I'd do the best job at writing up a piece of text. Nyttend (talk) 02:35, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Nyttend, here is the write up you are requesting for:
Constitutional Conference Commission:
In January 1994, Dr. Ofonagoro helped to form a commission of 19 scholars, lawyers, former federal secretaries, former ministers, etc. The aim of this commission was to invite memorandums from all over the nation to get to the root of the main issues in Nigeria and how they can be resolved. Out of this, elections were organized across the country where over 6000 wards were electing their respective delegates and district delegates to attend the Constitutional Conference.
The above article link can be used as a reference for this write-up. Thanks. Patrick Ofonagoro (talk) 00:51, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
Ofonagoro attends Intergovernmental Committee of the World Decade for Cultural Development (April 1997)

Nyttend, I found an article here: Intergovernmental Committee of the World Decade for Cultural Development
Please use this as a reference for this write-up to add to the wiki:
In April 1997, Dr. Ofonagoro attended the Fifth Regular Session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the World Decade for Cultural Development in Paris. During the session he took the floor to inform about new cultural development policies in Nigeria, based on cultural pluralism and consideration of the importance of culture in development.

Additional information to add to the article:
- Upon assumption office in March 1995, Dr. Ofonagoro immediately lifted the prescription previously imposed on three national Newspapers, namely, The Guardian, The Concord, and The Punch. Throughout his tenure, no Newspapers were proscribed in his endeavours to help protect the freedom of the press.
- Prior to Dr. Ofonagoro's assumption of office, only two radio stations were licensed to operate in Nigeria, namely Ray Power 100.45 in Lagos, and Minage at Obosi, both licensed in 1993. In 1996, he secured approval from the Head of State, General Sani Abacha, and issued operating broadcast licences to 9 private radio stations, 9 private television stations, and 2 privately owned, global satellite broadcasting stations; thus entrenching the culture of private ownership in the Nigerian broadcasting industry. Today, there are about 279 private radio and TV stations in Nigeria, but only the two private global satellite licences issued during Dr. Ofonagoro's tenure are operating along with NTA, the state-owned Satellite TV broadcaster.
