[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: no move: no consensus after 24 days, no messages in last 13 days. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 08:03, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WallsWalls (disambiguation) – Per WP:PLURAL, the most likely primary topic for this term is Wall, meaning the structure. Similar consensus was recently established for Doors and Wishes. So, I propose that the disambiguation page move to Walls (disambiguation), and then having Walls redirect to Wall. Steel1943 (talk) 01:21, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nom -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 04:39, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Should be written into WP:DAB and WP:PLURAL that this is the most sensible format. In ictu oculi (talk) 05:05, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Unlike "Doors" and "Wishes", about half of the entries on the Walls dab page do not refer to the plural of "wall", but to separate entities named "Walls" (i.e., the surnames, the placenames, etc.). There seems to be enough of a separate identity for "Walls" to keep it at a separate dab page. Dohn joe (talk) 05:56, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Dohn Joe. While consistency is generally good, wall is an unlikely target for the term "walls" anyway, and there are plenty of unrelated items there. No such user (talk) 08:55, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:33, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per WP:PLURAL. None of the ambiguous topics is a household name, but the common noun of which this is a plural is one. bd2412 T 22:46, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The topic of the "wall" is almost always in the plural. The singular wall is the exception. "Walls" are things that separate an interior from an exterior, structural walls bear the roof, etc. This walls is a PrimaryTopic. In term of long-standing significance, the English word predates English, no other topic comes close. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 07:13, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: too many other uses, not convinced its the Primary Topic, and readers of an encyclopedia will usually know to look for a singular term. But I've added the entry "The plural of wall, a structure" as the first of the "may refer to" list, as a major, but not primary, usage which needs to be more accessible than by making the reader slog through to the "See also" to find a link to Wall (disambiguation). • Oppose. I do support the general principle of the proposer. Here, however, I think that there are too many other uses. I note that no sources whatsoever have been cited in defense or support of this move request. For all the supporters know, Walls, Mississippi is a burgeoning metropolis of millions whose article receives thousands of views daily. (You laugh, and I do as well - but do you see my point? It's important to the determination of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC how many pageviews each claimant has, and how much long-term significance each claimant has, and we have not even attempted a discussion on this as of yet.) There are too many different usages specifically referring to "Walls" that I have to oppose. Red Slash 08:40, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per bd2412. The heavy presumption is that the primary topic of Walls is the structural meaning, per WP:PLURAL. While I sympathize with Red Slash's desire for more empirical analysis, the fact that PLURAL is a guideline places the burden in this case on those wishing to make an exception to the guideline. In other words, absent evidence, the guideline favors supporting this request, not opposing it. I see no good reason not to abide by normal conventions here. Xoloz (talk) 03:20, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Dohn joe, PamD and Red Slash. Plurals of wikipedia articles should not be systematically created, and left up to the discretion of editors if they feel the usage is common enough to motivate a redirect creation in each particular case. Please compare the example given in WP:PLURALPT, "Chair" and its dab page Chair (disambiguation) where the only plural is The Chairs. What with being a common surname, several populated places, the title/name of a bunch of music-related stuff, Walls is actually an excellent example of something that should be a dab page.
The ultimate logical outcome of redirecting all plurals to singulars, is every single foo (disambiguation) being merged with its foos (disambiguation) counterpart, or articles being cluttered with double hatnotes for the singular and plural dab page. walk victor falk talk 04:35, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please be cautious regarding references to WP:PLURAL or WP:PLURALPT. The guideline has seen major, consensus-driven changes during this move request. (See it all at WT:PLURAL). Again, these changes were driven by consensus and many of the people here, like me, participated in it. I'm just saying this to put it all above-board. Red Slash 05:33, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
